Description

Like the outgoing GP4000 S, Continental's Grand Prix 4000 S II Clincher Tire continues to use Black Chili, but now has Vectran technology to boost puncture protection. Vectran is a multi-fibered thermoplastic yarn that is made from a liquid crystal polymer.

Claimed to be stronger than steel, this offers additional resistance to penetration from road debris while being ultralight. Combined with Continental's Black Chili rubber compound, super-tiny carbon black particles incorporated into the rubber formula, the GP4000 S II is versatile enough for race wheels or training wheels.

The tiny size of Black Chili particles allows them to mold to variable road surfaces more readily. It gives the tire greater ability to conform to imperfections in the road surface for excellent grip in demanding situations such as high speed cornering. Since the Black Chili particles are so small, more particles fit into the contact patch of the tire, reducing tire wear and increasing tire longevity.

The Black Chili particles are also literally more flexible, which reduces the rolling resistance of the GP 4000 S II. The Continental GP 4000 S II is available in 700x23 and one color; Black/black.

Love this tire!!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a pair of these in 25mm width and put them on my bike replacing my old pair of Continental Grand Prix 4000 S Tire in the 23mm width. Over 2000 miles on the old pair. Since I don't race often the 25mm better suite my riding style of weekend warrior and century rides. I keep them inflated to almost max PSI, which keeps them rolling FAST. They grip great for me when I am flying down a canyon at 50mph+. I'll buy another set for sure once I wear down my current pair.

Great Tire, No Complaints

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This tire has a great feel on the road.

Gave it a very light sanding with 300 grit paper before the first ride to get rid of any release compound. Seems to have reliable grip.

Goes on the rim with average difficulty - not easy, but not hard either.

Time and Time Again. The BEST tire.

We're all cyclists. We all have our go-to products. There is no reason to run another clincher. I've tried other tires, but keep coming back.
These are the best overall. Sure, some may be faster rolling, smoother, grippier, longer lasting, or puncture resistant. But none check all of those boxes as well as these tires do.

    love it!

rolls really well!! switched over from the gator skins and i could not believe the difference. i've put about 500 miles on these so far and will never go back. Absolutely love them

    Mainstay

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This tire is a mainstay -- lightweight, durable, and rolls/corners well. The 25 width makes for an especially comfortable and fast ride.

    Love It!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Mother always knows best for her bike! Fantastic tire, love the feel, love the grip and it keeps my bike low in weight. Definitely would recommend this tire to anyone who wants a great all-around durable tire.

    Rolls - Corners - Grips

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I have been riding this brand of tire for at least 25,000 miles and have had 1 flat over that time. Currently riding the 700c x 25mm up from the 23mm and love the way this tire rolls, corners and grips. I don't race anymore but put in a lot of serious riding and climbing and have never thought about going to another brand of tire. You can't go wrong with this one, guaranteed! Coming down the mine road in Park City at 60 mph on these and never worry about a blowout or losing traction. Buy this tire and you will never go back to anything else!

    Scary

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought a pair of these based on the solid reviews. Unfortunately, I had a sidewall blowout on only their second ride (less than 50 miles in). I was riding 25mph in a straight line on smooth pavement and the rear sidewall blew with a very loud pop. Luckily I was able to stop quickly before damaging my rim. Sure enough there was a 0.75" tear on the sidewall. Can't imagine what if it had been the front tire that blew. While they are fast and light tires, I need to be able to actually ride on them to do me any good, so for me, they are not recommended.

    23's for the TT beast.

Soft rolling and confidence in the corners. Great race tire.

    Amazingly sticky

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Previous to using this tire(had the conti ultras) I was very nervous around any kind of corner. Now...I'm party sure I could go straight horizontal with these round bits of amazingness. I ride these all through the race season, 23's on my TT and 25's for the road bike. I'm constant,y impressed by there grip in tight/fast corners as well as the durability. I generally get 2500-3000 miles out of a pair and I could probably stretch that even further. Are they pricy?...yes, but backcountry has had some great deals on these. When they go on sale buy them up!

    Amazingly sticky

    Confident descents...on clean roads.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm a climber, which also means I'm a descender. This tire, thus far, has given me the most confidence when rounding the turns and switchbacks. On some long mountain descents I've topped out at 53 mph and the turns are smooth with a crisp grip. I can lean confidently under standard dry conditions, more so than other tires I've tried (only 2 others, Vitorria and Michelin). However, other riders I know swear by a particular Vitorria model. I think it's up to the rider to find out which tire suits them and their riding style and conditions. But the Conti 4000s II should be in the running.
My only drawback is that the sidewalls are really thin, and therefore weak, so as long as you don't find yourself on a dirt trail, it should be ok. I have to admit, in the winter, when the snow plows dump a ton of salt and gravel on the road, I do find myself uneasy with all the debris this renders, and I am constantly thinking about the pebbles hitting the sidewall. But that's a winter problem, and I have reduced climbing during the winter anyway.

    I have the 700 x 25 on Enve Smart 3.4 wheels.

    Best Tire Available Period

In our cycling group ( 45 cyclists) 90 per cent of our
Riders use the 4000s no complaints just the best tire on the market. We tend to use the
700 x 25s and let's hope they keep making them.

      Best all around tire

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

GP 4000's are by far the best all-around performance tire on the market. There are tires that may be more durable but they don't roll as fast. There are faster tires but they aren't as durable. The GP 4000 combines both characteristics marvelously. Go for the 25's if you have the space in your frame and fork. They rolll faster than the 23's.

"Ain't not broken don't fix it"

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Not sure what was Continental thinking why they were trying to improve something which was great. The old S was great and did holds well at all conditions I was riding them even on roads with patchy snow/ice (23 mm). Contrary S II is not made for everyday use, sidewalls are like a paper, it doesn't take to much to puncture. 500 miles and you better start looking for replacement. I ride in Colorado (5-7k miles a year) this new version is not what I was expecting at all. I stopped to using them even up front. Two or one star are appropriate in comparison to old version. I ride in all weather conditions on mixed roads, and yes I am heavier guy. 200lb

      Durability and Great Traction

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Got the 28mm tires first time around. Super nice rolling tire but the 28mm's barely fit through dura-ace brake calipers. Recommend going with 25mm's. Love these tires. I'm new to the road side of cycling so these are the only road tires I've used, but I rarely get flats. They have great cornering grip and roll fast. Got caught in the rain on one occasion and the tires never slipped. Of course I didn't try to push their limits in the rain but I didn't lose traction.

      tried and true

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Have been on the 4000S for years and just switched to these. No real noticeable difference in ride, which is a good thing because I loved the older version too. Photo shows the white decals on the side of the tire which are noticeable but not a deal breaker.

      tried and true

      Consistent all round tyres

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Have been running these clinchers and their predecessors for years. The new Mark II version appears much softer and tacky, whereas the old version would become quite hard over time.
Puncture resistance is good, and I have not had any issues with sidewall cuts as mentioned by others, even after spending time on rough roads and riding on gravel.
Would recommend these as a good value tire.

      Great tire at nice price

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I run 25s of these tires on my road bike. I'd recommend the move from 23s to 25s for just about anyone (weight increase is marginal and ride/rolling resistance are better). I've had them on for two years with some moderate riding on gravel roads included...very few flats. Conti definitely has beefier tires available, but I've really been impressed with the toughness of such a light tire.

The standard for all my bikes

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

You get consistent performance and comfort riding these tires. Yes they do not last for ever but traction is excellent, rain or shine.
