crank bros have a simple, reliable, and effective design. clipping in and out is easy, and the tention feels great: no need for adjustments. from a strictly mechanical sense, SPDs have more moving parts, more bolts to loose and hinges to break. crank bros operate simply by spring tension. i feel the platform is a must for anything rough. eggbeaters will roll underfoot extremely easily, and cause issues for those times when you're not quite clipped in. mud clearance is much better than my old SPDs too.
bottom line is that the crank brothers is much simpler and lighter than any shimano offering, while being just as effective if not more so
