Amazing Body Armor For Any Sport

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased POC's Spine VPD 2.0 Jacket last spring for off road motorcycle riding. I have never liked any of my upper body armor before. Always too heavy, uncomfortable or not enough protection. The Spine VPD 2.0 Jacket has solved my near endless search. The VPD 2.0 material is just like D3O although being POC's own mix they have more control when customizing the shape of the armor pieces. The jacket is very well made with many nice touches designed into it. This jacket needs to be worn near your body. At room temperature the VPD 2.0 material is stiff. Your body heat warms the pads, which soften and become flexible. Once warm it is very comfortable to wear. This is not something you can keep in the back of your truck and put on at the ski area. It needs to be at body temperature. For motorcycle riding and mountain biking this is perfect. I love the chest pad design as it is very flexible and the back protector is robust. The Spine VPD 2.0 Jacket is serious protection, not just some flimsy shirt with pads. I like it so much that I started to wear it snowboarding. The spine protection covers your tailbone up to the back of your neck. You will notice this on the chairlift although not on the ride down. I feel the elbow pads are overkill for snow sports too. I don't mind the length of spine protection because it will make a difference with a bad crash, but I would like to have an elbow padless version for snowboarding. POC does make a vest that offers the spine protection but I would still choose the jacket for it's awesome chest pad (even though it has the elbow pads). I am trying to make this review short and helpful, but there are so many good aspects to this body armor. Well done POC.
