The original performance enhancer.

Coffee has long been a presence in cycling. While the cycling community shares collective memories involving grand tour leaders enjoying a cup on rest days or the classic pictures of greats like Coppi having a coffee with the morning paper during six day races, most of us have also developed our own personal connection between cycling and coffee — usually in the presence of friends and fellow cyclists. This relationship between coffee and sport is what compelled the founding of Silver Bean Coffee, and now we've had the opportunity to partner with them to create Old Ranch Roast.

Silver Bean was founded by Matt and Shannon Happe (née Bahrke), two people who love exploring the terrain of Utah's Wasatch Mountains and then sharing their experiences over coffee. Shannon's collection of two Olympic and two World Championship mogul medals indicates her love of snow. Matt, who originally emigrated from Nebraska "to see what real snow was all about," also took well to the roads and trails of the Wasatch, founding what became one of the largest bike shops in Utah.

The Happes also love their community and their sports, helping no fewer than 30 athletes on the U.S. Ski Team toward their sporting goals, contributing to local charity and community support organizations, and staying active and present in sports programs, races, and general get-outside-type events in the local scene.

The Old Ranch Roast blend is named for the Old Ranch Road loop, a staple ride near our home office in Park City, Utah. Given that it's surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains, the loop is relatively tame when it comes to climbing, so it accommodates all types of rides, groups, and purposes. Our memories of it include everything from mellow group rides, where we let the crank do the work while chatting with friends through cool-weather base miles, to cross-eyed hammerfest intervals in the big ring. Given our love for the ride, we had high hopes for the blend.

The Old Ranch Road — err — Roast is a thoughtfully crafted blend of varietals that strongly represents the espresso end of the coffee spectrum. It grinds up with an outspoken, aromatic bouquet whose scent alone may brighten your morning-dimmed eyes as much as actually drinking a milder breakfast blend. It's expressive and balanced, standing alone as a superb shot. If a high-pressure espresso machine isn't in your budget, then we recommend a French press to get the best experience of the blend's flavors and oils; however, as long as it was finely ground, we enjoyed Old Ranch Roast's pronounced suspended solids even while using a drip coffee maker.

The weight of its body and its espresso-esque complexity also recommend it for mixing with milk, so, like the cycling loop for which it's named, Old Ranch Roast can be as strong or as gentle as you'd like. Hit the single shot for Coppi-approved kick, or pair it with steamed or chilled cream for a slow morning on the first rest day.
