We typically associate the name Colnago with tradition, history, and lugged joints. From the steel Master we fell in love with in our youths to the legendary C40 that made carbon viable in even the most punishing races, lugged construction has long been Colnago's signature. The all-new V1-R Road Frameset isn't the first monocoque model that Colnago has given pride of place in its line of bikes, but it does feel like a break in tradition for the Italian manufacturer. That being said, it also represents the renewal of an old tradition. For the V1-R's development, Colnago has officially partnered with Ferrari for the first time since the mid-'80s. From aerodynamic refinements to stiffness and hardware innovations, the collaboration and its product are remarkable successes.

The V1-R may be the first monocoque frame in Colnago's stable that's light enough to hold its own with other top-end monocoque framesets. We weighed a 54cm frame with seat collar and headset at 1,080g, which puts it squarely on the average mark of the other Italian monocoque frames you'll see in the pro peloton. In fact, losing weight is something of a theme for the V1-R. It drops a claimed 150 grams compared to its predecessor, the Colnago M10. In addition to refined tube shaping and the world's best carbon fiber, small details like carbon rear dropouts and direct-mount brakes no doubt contribute by eliminating unnecessary hardware.

The monocoque frame also allows for more aerodynamic shaping, doing away with bulky lugs to maintain a wind-cheating cross section throughout every part of the frameset. The V1-R is meant for riding in variable conditions and at variable speeds, not just time trials, and Colnago calculated that we typically ride at yaw angles of 12-18 degrees. To accommodate these aerodynamic demands, the V1-R's vertical tubes, seatpost, and fork were designed with a rounded leading edge and an abruptly terminating, flat-back tail. This results not only in a smaller aerodynamic footprint in a much wider range of drag angles, but it also increases lateral stiffness while maximizing weight savings — all of which is very impressive considering how simple the shape is.

This simple shaping begins with a complex blend of materials. Over nine different types of carbon feature throughout its construction, all of which are sourced from Toray's Japanese factory. This is the most consistent carbon fiber in the world, guaranteed perfect, every time, which is why it's the same stuff that Boeing insists on for its aircraft. This carbon is so sought after that Colnago is the only manufacturer able to use it for 100% of their frames.

While the partnership with Ferrari may benefit aerodynamics and material choice, Colnago has proven time and again that it needs no outside expertise in designing frame geometry. The V1-R has a taller stack height and a longer, more stable wheelbase than its co-captain, the C60, and if the industry's tendency to over-specialize were to force it into a category, the V1-R's low weight and geometry would rate it a climber's bike, built for guys like Europcar's Rolland who take big time on big days in the mountains and are more concerned about the fast, sweeping corners of descents then the sharp angles of criteriums. Make no mistake, it's plenty fast on flats to justify its use by sprinters like Coquard, but its qualities lend it more to maintaining speed rather than sharp accelerations.

Finally, the V1-R has a new bottom bracket type, the ThreadFit 82.5, which improves on the ease and simplicity of press fit bottom brackets by eliminating the creaking typically associated with them. The frame itself has a steel sleeve built-in to the bottom bracket, which an aluminum shell screws into. Since machining makes these pieces more precise than even the most refined carbon construction methods can, this essentially eliminates the microscopic imperfections in the crank/frame interface that can cause creaking over time. The aluminum insert is also replaceable in this system, so it can be replaced as it begins to wear, keeping your bottom bracket pristine for years to come.

Please note that the Colnago V1-R's innovative design means it has some compatibility requirements. The ThreadFit 82.5 is compatible with all PressFit 86 setups, so, with the proper adapters, it's ready to go with SRAM, Shimano, and Campagnolo cranksets, as well as virtually any third party manufacturers. The V1-R also uses integrated, direct-bolt brake calipers. While Shimano currently offers compatible models, Colnago addresses the absence in other lines by manufacturing its own direct-bolt brakes.
