A tale of two cyclists.

Colnago markets the CX Zero 105 Alloy Complete Bike as a "gran fondo" bike, but we know better. This is, after all, the same "gran fondo" geometry that the professionals at Europcar have field-tested across both the stones of Roubaix and the peaks of the Tour. This is one of the only geometries to be used in virtually every race on the European calendar, so we know for a fact that it's capable of comfortably noodling through charity rides and hammering across the Alps — it all depends on what type of cyclist you want to be on any given day.

The CX Zero Alloy frame's geometry is exactly the same as the CX Zero Evo that team Europcar races on with one exception: the seat tube is a more robust 31.6 millimeters. It still has the same long wheelbase, high stack, and short reach as the CX Zero Evo, which puts you in a more comfortable and stable upright position than traditionally aggressive racing frames like the C60, relaxing your arms and opening the angle between your torso and thighs.

While aluminum doesn't have the built-in dampening of carbon fiber, the CX Zero Alloy is still built to keep you from being rattled out of the saddle. The seatstays are thinned and slightly flattened to absorb hits and road noise, which is further complemented by the chainstays' slight up-kick at the rear dropout. The chainstays thicken as the approach the bottom bracket, which maintains efficient power transfer for long days spent grinding up climbs and helps the frame find the ideal balance between stiff efficiency and plush ride comfort.

The Shimano 105 drivetrain continues the CX Zero Alloy's balancing act by coming out ahead in three metrics that seem mutually exclusive: reliable durability, precise operation, and economic concerns. 105 boasts improvements to the trim in the front, the spring and cable pitch in the rear, the indexing in the shifters, and the lever bodies themselves, which have been slimmed down to more closely match Dura-Ace. The only significant sacrifice 105 makes is in weight. For example, the shift levers gain a paltry 40 grams compared to the equivalent Ultegra model.
