Description

The Cat's Meow

The Catlike Whisper Plus, with its noticeable rounded vents, is the most recognizable of the Catlike line. However, predating it by almost four years is the Catlike Kompacto. This helmet lacks the visibility within the pro-tours, but makes up for it with an economical, lightweight, and supremely well-fitting helmet.

The Kompacto was ahead of its time. In fact, it was the basis for the Whisper's striking aesthetic and ventilation. It's almost a reverse technological trickle at Catlike, with ground floor models like the Kompacto serving as the proving grounds and inspiration for the rest of the line. The in-mold shell is constructed around Catlike's signature CES (Crash Energy Splitter) exoskeleton, which disperses impact energy along the structure of the helmet in the event of a crash. You'll also get 21 generously-sized vents that are patterned along the shell in a manner nearly identical to the Whisper. All the forward-facing vents have a matching rear exhaust vent to keep the air moving quickly over your head. And, like the Whisper, this reduced shell surface area reduces the weight of the helmet. In fact, a medium Kompacto comes in at 280 grams, which is considerably lighter than most helmets at the same pricepoint.

The Kompacto uses the same MPS (Multi Position System) retention system as the top-shelf Whisper Plus. The MPS is constructed around a rubberized plastic strap that attaches into, and pivots from, a socket in the shell of the helmet at the temple, which then follows the side of your head and curves around towards the back, where it floats freely from the nylon web straps. The rubberized strap is soft and pliable, so it never gets crimped or warped in your gear bag, and it always conforms to your natural shape. The MPS suspension has two lateral adjusters that have a push button release on a ratchet strap that connects across the back of the head to allow for adjustment. This allows the whole system to slide up and down on the rearward web straps. Unlike many helmets, the Kompacto can comfortably accommodate a wide variety of head shapes.

Large vents help to keep you head cool, but they also let the bugs in. For this reason, the Catlike Kompacto Helmet includes a removable bug net. It also comes with a matching visor and plugs for the visor holes for when the visor is not in use. It comes in Small, Medium, or Large. You may choose from White/green/black, White/red/black, White, or Black matte colorways.

Mushroom Cap

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Cool looking helmet in pictures but ended up having a very wide profile. This led to the proverbial mushroom cap effect on my head. Sticking with the lower profile of other helmet manufacturers.
