Packable protection from the elements.

When ominous weather looms over race day, we often see the pros requesting a modified water bottle that's been stuffed with a lightweight jacket. Mechanics simply cut a bottle's top off and drop it in the seat tube cage, providing convenient and effective storage for riders to quickly access additional layers, nutrition, and rain shells. For the Garmin-Barracuda riders choosing this option, chances are that team mechanics are outfitting those bottles with Castelli's Sottile Due Jackets.

The Sottile Due Jacket is Castelli's new lightweight barrier against the elements. It's light enough to wad up and stuff in your jersey pocket or bottle without adding any noticeable weight or bulk to your kit. The jacket is constructed from a blend of Castelli's breathable, water-, and wind-resistant fabrics, with mesh at the underarms for added breathability. The body panels of the Sottile Due are semi-transparent, so your team kit and race number stay visible through the gloomiest of weather. Designers at Castelli kept the fit of the jacket fairly trim and body-forming. This is to keep weight to a minimum and to avoid the 'garbage bag' effect caused by many ill-fitting shells. Sleeves are long to accommodate the cycling position, with a generous drop-hem to further cover your backside.

The Sottile was created with a minimal design, but the small and important details were given proper consideration. A full-length contrasting front zipper aids in both temperature regulation and on-the-bike removal. Rounded elastic banding at the cuffs and hem keep the jacket in place, a single side zipper provides access to your jersey's pockets underneath, and small reflective elements increase your visibility in low-light conditions.

The Castelli Sottile Due Jacket is available in six sizes from Small to XXX-Large and in the colors Transparent White and Yellow Fluo.

  • Breathable, wind- and water-resistant fabric
  • Semi-transparent
  • Mesh panels at underarms
  • Trim fit
  • Full-length contrast zipper

First Castelli item I buy, was expecting so much more. Terrible finish quality.

Keeps you warm and repels water

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

This jacket does what it is intended to do. It repels water and keeps you warm in chilly days. I ride at 5-15 centigrade degrees with a 50% chance of rain most of the time. This jacket keeps me cozy and dry. It is light and folds small. I like the zippers to get access to the back pockets of my jersey. The zipper bites the fabric at the bottom of the neck (slight design problem). I got one in white, and it is totally transparent.

Great, Sometimes

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I love the idea & packability of this jacket, the actual execution not as much. It's great to stuff in a jersey pocket & barely notice as you're climbing along then throw on over a summit for a long decent. However in changeable conditions or once you start working up a sweat it's a bit like a greenhouse inside. Once the inner fabric gets moisture on it the fabric starts sticking to your skin making removal difficult while riding. The tiny zipper doesn't make things easy either.

I wanted to love it, but find myself reaching for it only really in good weather with a chilly decent ahead of me.

Zipper was disappointing

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I really wanted a morning ride shell I could shove in my jersey pocket. This jacket has a large flap at the top to ensure a good seal from wind/rain, which is great. BUT, I can't get the dang thing to zip without the big flap getting pulled into the zipper.

Love the jacket, but zipper isn't working for me.

I'm opting for a castelli vest and warmers instead.

first thoughts

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

great visibility, its more think and see through than i thought it would be, but just as high viz. I got the small even though i wear medium for Castelli jersey and bibs, it was the right call.

The Bad: no bag! I have a castelli wind vest from lats year and it came with a little pouch you could put it in. that would have been perfect for this, totally needs it.
