When the weather turns cold, windy, and rainy, Castelli makes sure you have no clothing-related excuses for not riding outdoors. Its new Sella Rain Jacket packs the comfort and features found in your favorite long sleeve jersey, but constructed it from beefed-up, technically advanced materials to keep you protected and out on the open road.

To make the Sella Rain Jacket your go-to for wet weather riding, Castelli constructed it from the Torrent 3-layer laminate. This material is completely waterproof, wind-resistant, and highly breathable. And while we're always hesitant to support claims of waterproofness and breathability, this material has a water column rating of 10,000mm. Additionally, Castelli taped all of the jacket's seams, included a high, flip-up collar for added protection, and installed a waterproof zipper -- complete with rain flap and zipper garage -- in order to keep water from trickling in unexpectedly. For breathability, Castelli placed two large, zippered ventilation ports at the underarm portions of the jacket. Together, the fabric's attributes and characteristics provide a level of protection that keeps water from getting in, but rapidly assists its getting out.

Just as importantly, Torrent 3-layer was selected for its ability to stretch. As a result, the Sella Rain provides a hard-shell level of protection with the feel and freedom of movement of a softshell jacket. This clever system of protection also accentuates the purposeful cut and fit of the Sella. Essentially, the jacket's shape has been cut to mirror the body in the cycling position. So, you'll notice that the back has been elongated with the sleeves. This way, the annoyance of fabric bunching and pulling has been eliminated while you're on the hoods or in the drops.

Castelli finished off the jacket with microfleece lining at the inside collar, a left sleeve zippered pocket, elastic drawcord at the hem, and adjustable hook-and-loop closures at the wrists. And to increase your visibility to motorists in low-light riding conditions, Castelli added reflective piping and screen printing throughout the jacket.

The Sella Rain Jacket is available in sizes X-Small through X-Large and in the colors Black/red and White.

High performance technical jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I brought this jacket to a 4-day cycling trip in the San Juan Islands in Washington State, having been told it can get very cold and rainy there. We had beautiful weather, so I didn't really test this in very wet or windy conditions, but we did get some light mist and were riding so fast we created our own wind chill... :o) Anyway, this jacket is very protective and perfectly shaped for cycling - long drop hem, short front, long sleeves, high neck (high but soft - not irritating at all). All of this makes it look a bit silly if you are just standing around, but that's not what it's meant for. The reflective piping is *very* reflective, but there is no additional "screen printing" that I noticed except for the Castelli logo.
I was very impressed with how breathable it was - I never felt clammy; in fact, I would get much clammier wearing my Marmot Precip on a light hike than wearing this jacket. That said, it is pretty warm. The vents help, but it's not a super light jacket. nor is it super packable. All told, a lot of performance and does exactly what it says it will. Although I didn't take it into a downpour, I have no doubt that it would keep me dry and comfortable in wet conditions.

Is this jacket easily packable ? Like fit...

Is this jacket easily packable ? Like fit in a rear pocket ?

You will have to roll it pretty this jacket is made of a '3-ply' material, and is a little heavier than some others; hence they also rate it for Spring/Fall use. With a good jersey, especially one made with carbon fiber materials, the pockets and whole jersey in general will be very supportive, of both the rider, and also of any items placed in pockets.

Of course, you can also opt. for a hydration pack (Osprey's the best), so you can easily pack this, and all other essentials, easily...and have easy and necessary water throughout the ride...they are so worth it!

Hope this still helps!

No, not really. It's a bit thicker and stiffer material, like what you get in a Patagonia/Gore tex jacket. If you want lightweight and stashable, try the Compatto.
