Get modern.

We have a secret love for modernist aesthetics here at Competitive. While so many players from the indie, recreational side of the industry are rocking the sinuous lines and organic compositions of Art Nouveau for event posters and the like, our Castelli Sanremo Speed Grid skinsuit sticks to a style of sharp edges and high contrast that speak more to the engineering that informs a finely tuned piece of race machinery. After all, competitive cycling is about uncompromising speed, not the melancholic gestures to the past that manifest as retro randonneuring. Don't get us wrong, we also enjoy those old-school touring rides spent fiddling with down tube shifters for several hundred kilometers; but when it's time to race for real, we insist on all the trappings of modern kit.

Our insistence on race-bred speed led us straight to Castelli's door. Since it combines the fastest, lightest jersey and bib shorts in Castelli's line — which is renowned for excelling in those qualities — the Sanremo 2.0 Speed Suit was the obvious canvas for our artistic vision. The seamless, dimpled Body Paint shorts make up the Speed Grid's lower portion, and the now-classic Aero Race jersey constitutes the top. The subtraction of seams and addition of dimples downstairs helps to manage laminar airflow and reduce turbulence while eliminating transitional ridges between panels that could catch wind and create drag. The Aero Race upper does its part by combining a second-skin fit with turbulence-managing patterning in order to reduce a cyclist's aerodynamic footprint.

The Speed Grid's front zipper allows for easy elimination of natural issues — a rare luxury before Castelli promoted it to the mainstream — and the traditional road jersey complement of three rear pockets provides storage for the self-supported athlete across triathlons, 'cross races, circuit loops, and long time trials. The suit is finished with Castelli's Progetto X2 Air chamois, which wraps Castelli's Viscous comfort inserts and multi-density foam in a bacteriostatic cover that stretches to conform to and move with a cyclist pedaling in anger.
