Aiming to hamper the enemy’s ability to perceive a ship’s distance and exact location once it had been targeted, dazzle—or razzle dazzle—was a defining maritime strategy of the World Wars. Though its success rates were never concretely proven, the style, drawing comparisons to cubism and a certain member of the Equus family, remains visually arresting. Suffice it to say, we think it warrants celebration, so we teamed up with the experts at Castelli to create the Razzle Free Aero Men's Bib Shorts on the platform of Castelli’s legendary Free Aero design. When paired with the companion jersey of the same name, the kit will do anything but camouflage you out on the roads, helping you stay seen in sleek throwback style.
Beneath the stripes, alternating panels of Vortex and Forza fabrics establish the short’s contoured fit, following your body movements in the saddle so they can rapidly move moisture to the surface to keep you as cool and dry as possible. Vortex, positioned along the outer leg, also features dimpling to help you slice through the air more efficiently, which can make a difference on longer rides where you’re counting watts. Forza’s 38% Lycra content equips the fabric to hold its shape whether your rides are more about length or frequency, and it stabilizes the muscles of your inner leg to ward off fatigue. The Doppio V waistband construction creates a smooth transition between the shorts and bib, supporting your waist and lower back as they assist you in the saddle.
Castelli uses its most open bib construction for the Free Aero, which we admire for its unrestrictive fit. In stark contrast to the shorts' loud camo, the whisper-thin bib straps sit quietly beneath a jersey, and the airy fabric of the bib itself draws moisture away from your skin while giving you freedom to move around and take full breaths on tough climbs. Similarly, the wide Giro Air leg grippers seem, at first glance, too much like mesh to be capable of holding the legs of the Razzle in place. Their gentle grip and flexibility are enough to forget about once you’re riding, with all the effectiveness of elastic but none of the pinch.
Though we’ve spent more time than usual discussing the outside of the Razzle, the inside features the equally impressive Progetto X2 Air chamois, Castelli’s most advanced offering and therefore its lightest. Strategic pockets of plush foam are complemented by a soft, odor-resistant microfiber cover, and the entire insert was tested to stretch and breathe amply to limit the possibility of chafing and discomfort.
