The emperor's new shorts.

Castelli looked to its earlier designs while developing its latest bib shorts masterpiece, seeking to improve upon its impressive Body Paint with a lighter, faster, and more comfortable platform. We can't imagine it was an easy task, but the resulting men's Mondiale Bib Short confidently establishes a name atop the monument of Castelli's other impressive offerings. The short combines new fabric and pared-down construction for a short that feels as close as possible to wearing nothing at all.

A major theme of Castelli when constructing the Mondiales was to create shorts that wearers would be able to forget they had on for logging long hours on the road free of clothing-related distractions. The all-new Cinquanta fabric of the body is the key to this disappearing act. Composed of 50% Lycra, the matte black fabric supports leg muscles while achieving an impossibly contoured fit with better rebound capabilities than the Body Paint short. The Mondiale's fit is further supplemented with reduced panel construction and one fewer seam than its predecessor. Since Castelli tapes the single seam in the body, the Mondiale moves closer than ever towards a fully seamless, remarkably imperceptible bib short.

The Mondiale is the top tier of Castelli's training bib short line, so it's no surprise that it includes Castelli's similarly luxurious Progetto X2 chamois. Featuring multi-density foam arranged in a strategic topography, the anatomic design cushions and supports while managing to fluidly follow your movements in the saddle. It's completed with a soft, breathable, bacteriostatic micro-denier cover whose four-way stretch maintains comfort against sensitive skin.

Low-profile may be an understatement when describing the Mondiale's bib straps. Their bonded construction lies flat to all but disappear under jerseys without feeling restrictive, and the laser-cut perforations on the back of the bibs facilitate airflow to ensure unobtrusive support once you're stretched out over the handlebars. Castelli finishes the Mondiale off with clean, bonded leg endings lined with silicone for a last bit of added security on an already impeccably tailored design.

  • Anatomically contoured bib short for riding long distances
  • Cinquanta fabric with 50% Lycra for support and resilient stretch
  • Gentle compression maintains comfort and boosts recovery
  • Progetto X2 Air chamois soaks up fatiguing vibration
  • No-sew bonded leg endings with silicone gripper
  • No-sew bonded bibs with laser-cut ventilation holes
  • Sleek, streamlined aesthetic with stealthy colorway
  • Castelli submits an official entry to the "Bib Shorts of the Gods" category

Almost perfect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

This is the most comfortable bib short I have ever owned....from the waist down. The fabric, the chamois, the fit is perfect. The only negative for this bib is the straps. I have no idea what they are made out of, but the fabric is very coarse. I honestly don't notice on rides, but every time I put it on I think "what the heck is this? sandpaper?". Make the straps out of a more comfy material and it's an easy 5 stars

Epic Bibs

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Epic bibs: I rode 120mi w/ 10k ft of elevation last weekend in comfort. Castelli straps are made to feel tight because they fit best in the riding position not the standing position. Run slightly small like all Castelli products, but not as small as other Castelli bibs I've owned. My 3rd different Castelli bib model and I like these the best.

Best bibs ever!

Expensive but these are my favorite bib shorts of all time. Super comfortable even after a longer ride. Can't say I wold pay full price of almost $300, but getting them at half off for $150 was certainly well worth the money. I usually wear a small but know Castelli products run at least one size smaller so the medium fits perfectly I am 5' 9", 165 pounds with a 32" waist.

Great fit but. . . Durability?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been riding on the road for 12 years, gradually increasing mileage each year. Lately riding 100-150 miles per week. Louis Garneau Mondo Evo bibs used to be my go to bibs, then got a pair of the Castelli body paint 2.0's, best bibs I've owned lasted more than 2 seasons and finally ripped at a seam. Wanted to get something similar so tried a pair of Castelli Free Aero Race bibs, great fit but after about 2.5 mos began ripping at a seem, competive cyclist warranteed them, new bibs same style, no problem. In 1.5 mos, had worn through the material at the seat. Warranteed again, upgraded to the Mondiales. Great fit very comfortable, while I was looking at the credit on my credit card statement had already worn thru the material in the seat, 1 month. Warranteed again. 3 weeks into 4th pair, 2nd pair of Mondiales.

They fit great, no seam design is awesome. The Castelli chamois is great, better than the Garnous chamois which was my go to for four plus years. I hope these one's last a little bit because I love they way they feel.

My only complaint are the straps. The front part of the straps are very rough and scratchy on my shoulders and chest area. The more it is stretched the scratchier it gets. I wore a base layer so it was fine but I don't always want to wear a base but with these I have too. I was expecting more in terms of material and workmanship for the price. I wear a 32 inch waist in slacks and the large fits tight but tolerable. I feel the like the straps are being overstretched and causing my shoulders to hunch over. I think the XL would be better for me.

Great bib: sub par chamois

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XXL

The bib size and material is very good. I prefer longer length and these are perfect. But I can't believe this chamois is in a $300. retail bib. It's basically a soft sponge good for short rides only. I've got 3 bibs from that Swiss company; same fit but chamois is far superior. Spend the extra money and enjoy your first 400K brevet.!

Just fantastic

I had purchased a pair of LG carbon bib and they seemed okay until they rubbed a specific (private) part the wrong way and was terrified of it happening again. So I purchased the Mondiale's. At first I thought they were a bit tight but it was just me. The chamois and padding below my seat was great. Extremely comfortable while maintaining strong durability during long rides. These are my go to bib shorts, especially for long rides. Castelli is the best.

My current go to's

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are my absolute new go to short/bib's. I'm a XXL fit in nearly everything Castelli and these fit true to their sizing philosphy. That being said measure twice and order once. The straps although thin and flimsy have held up just fine and seem to be soft enough that if I'm not wearing a mesh under shirt they won't try and sand my nipples off.

I totally have to disagree on the straps being soft enough to use without a base/mesh. I had my buddies feel it and they were shocked! Unacceptable for the price... Unless mine are defective I'm not sure.

Castelli amazes.... again.

I was thrilled to put these bibs on and have the familiar feel of the best chamois ive ever used. Please never change it! The look is new to me and I love it. No lines. The fit is everything I expected and am accustomed to. Castelli has done it again.

Definitely One of the best

I grabbed these bibs to see how they compared to Ra... They are awesome. Great fit, great support. Did a back to back ride with them riding to/from a 4th of July 2-day location and they were amazing. Castelli really has done a great job with their chamois too. Can't recommend these enough. Going to grab some Free Aero Race shorts next.

Longevity questions

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

First thing you notice when you handle these bib shorts is how thin the straps/suspenders are. They're not stitched at all, but rather a single cut of fabric. I am 5'10" 145lbs and the medium fits lengthwise, but for me there is a little extra room in the leg/groin. I guess I'll have to bulk up. One thing I've noticed is a weird extra flap glued into the inside of the right thigh. I have no idea what it's for...
