Castelli Merlin Team Bib Shorts $139.95
Cast a spell on you.
We find it fitting that a classic frame builder like Merlin partnered with an iconic designer like Castelli in order to create the Merlin Team Bib Shorts. Yes, the Atlantic Ocean might physically separate the two, but they're undeniably united in a common dedication to perfection. So, whether you say 'espresso' or 'expresso,' you'll still be experiencing the ultimate in comfort.
Starting with the bulk of the construction, Castelli employed the venerable Affinity Lycra at the quads and hamstring areas of the shorts. This material features a compositional weight of 210g/m2. Now, you're probably digging for relevance here, so let us explain. This form of measurement, g/m2, describes the pressure required to return a fabric to its natural state of rest after a specific percentile of elongation. In other words, it's a measurement of its elasticity, and at 210g/m2, Affinity confirms itself as a certified Power Lycra. Accordingly, it will hold your muscle groups firm against the fatigue-inducing effects of road vibration and muscle oscillation. However, this isn't to say that this material is coarse and heavy. Instead, you'll find that it's quite breathable, lending itself perfectly to hot racing and riding conditions.
At the side and back panels of the bib shorts, Castelli placed its Shield micro fabric. This material features a lighter compositional weight and a higher level of elasticity than Affinity. For this reason, Castelli placed it at common points of articulation and stretch. So, you needn't worry about any chafing or rubbing, as the bib shorts are designed for a natural level of body conformity.
And while having some of the best materials in the world at your disposal is a good start, Castelli knows that the true quality of bib shorts lies in the fit. That's why the Merlin Team features a minimally seamed construction. Additionally, the legs use Castelli's compliant, barely-there Giro3 grippers. For the uppers, Castelli continued with the ever-evolving micro-mesh bib straps. These uppers cover a minimal amount of surface area in order to avoid and prevent any contribution to heat under the jersey. By combining all of these design features, Castelli ensures a supportive fit that's completely free from even the thought of abrasion or discomfort.
For even further comfort, Castelli gave the bib shorts its second-tier chamois, the Kiss3. The Kiss3's surface uses a seamless top layer that conforms to the body without folding. Additionally, this layer features a soft, brushed microfiber material that supports airflow and aids in evaporation. The second layer is multi-density foam with variable thickness placed where you need it, not where you don't. The comfort level is also aided by Castelli's Viscous comfort inserts, which are perforated pads that add to the comfort at the highly-sensitive ischial and perineum pressure regions.
The Castelli Merlin Team Bib Shorts are available in the color Black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

- How to Measure:
- For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
- Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
- Natural Waist:
- Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
- Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
- Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
- Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
What community has to say
It works well
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
It was recommended by many friends that bibs are well worth the investment over shorts. Its my first Castelli bib and I'm happy with the purchase. I don't have much comparison, but these are great. Its comfortable and the shoulder straps stay flat while riding. The grippers are flat and do not slide up, or leave dents or impressions.
The shorts are essentially black, so it should go with most kits. People don't know what Merlin is, so you don't have to be to careful about mixing logos/brands if that sort of thing bothers you.
The Kiss pad is comfortable. Not having tried a product with the Progetto pad, it is a huge improvement over anything with a chamois.
Washed several times and no fading of the colors, or seams unravelling.
These things are even better when Competitive Cyclist had them for <$90.
I'm 6'0" and 200lbs and the XL is the right size for me. The other reviews for Castelli sizing (go up your normal size) is sound advice.
