I wear a 10.5 and the large is actually a little baggy around the ankle. I have to use longer socks to fill them out a bit. Other than that, they are constructed well with seams and reinforcement in the right spots.
Worse than the Pearl Izumi covers
The similar PI's lasted 6 months before the rear zipper failed on one cover. I thought I would try the Castelli's in white. I got the white for the increased visibility on my predawn rides. I wear the Sidi Dominators (43.5) which have a racheting adjustment near the ankle.
The Castelli's are hard to slip over the shoes. I put them on the shoe and just left them on the shoes for fear of tearing the elastic at the opening of the cover. I bought a size large to fit my 9 1/2 size shoe. I would not want the the covers to be any longer (slightly baggie on the bottom/rear of the cover) .
The elastic at the opening of the cover has already separated from the rest of the shoe cover. This occured after a handful of rides.
The shoe covers are frail and disposable. They need a zipper and better stitching. I would not recommend this product.
great shoe cover
bought em for my wife and love the fact that these dont have a zipper at all,, you slip them over your feet and forget about them,, has a strip of reflective material on the back that is very noticeable, the covers are warm enough for our So Cal winters,,

Are these shoe covers too? heavy to wear in warmer weather
Not at all. You should be fine in about any temp. with these shoe covers.

I want to buy the shoe covers for cooler weather, 30's-40's F. would these help?
Yes. Absolutely. These are really nice booties. Wear warm socks (wool preferably for its wicking and fast-drying properties) and put these on over your shoes. You should be good to go in even colder temps than 30.

I want to cover my shoes for cooler weather/wind, possibly in the 30's-40's. Would these help?
yes this will help any colder and I would start to look at insulated covers.

What's the bottom look like? I don't want to have to cut my own openings - that never seems to work for me. Openings big enough for SPDs?
These covers are big enough for the hockey-puck cleats that so many road riders use. You should be fine with an SPD, and you won't have to cut your own holes.

How large is large? Hubby wears a size 11.5/12 - will they fit him?
A large shoecover is for a 43/44 euro, which is closer to a US Mens 10/10.5. He'll need an XL.
