Acute truth.

The cycling industry has become a digital space. From training apps to wireless power meters and automatic uploads, we're always connected, always on the electronic rivet. Given this level of virtual involvement, the race of truth becomes even more refreshing since it pits one cyclist against his own limits — no drafting, no tactics, just carefully portioned suffering. The Sanremo Greater Than Skinsuit is a collaboration between Competitive Cyclist (us) and Castelli (the Italian kit authority) as a celebration of the times in cycling where the suffering is so acute that it's impossible to escape into your own head, let alone the digital space of social media. Sometimes, the unmediated pain and pleasure of overcoming is greater than the need to broadcast your efforts to the world.

Since the Greater Than's focus is on time trials, Castelli's Sanremo 2.0 skinsuit was the obvious choice to base it on. The Sanremo combines the fastest, lightest jersey and bib shorts in Castelli's line — which is an especially notable distinction since that line is renowned for excelling in those qualities. The seamless, dimpled Body Paint shorts make up the Speed Grid's lower portion, and the now-classic Aero Race jersey constitutes the top.

The subtraction of seams and addition of dimples downstairs helps to manage laminar airflow and reduce turbulence while eliminating transitional ridges between panels that could catch wind and create drag. The Aero Race upper does its part by combining a second-skin fit with turbulence-managing patterning in order to reduce a cyclist's aerodynamic footprint.

The Greater Than's front zipper allows for easy natural breaks — a rare luxury before Castelli promoted it to the mainstream — and the traditional road jersey complement of three rear pockets provides storage for the self-supported athlete across triathlons, 'cross races, circuit loops, and long time trials. The suit is finished with Castelli's Progetto X2 Air chamois, which wraps Castelli's Viscous Comfort Inserts and multi-density foam in a bacteriostatic cover that stretches to move with a cyclist during the gradual descent into the pain cave.

Seemless and Aero

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I have always worn and liked Castelli. This suit is no different. The chamois is the best there and the integration of shirt and short is seemless. It really is a speed suite made for hot/cool weather. The shirt is thin and aero while the shorts encompass some of castelli's best aero technology to be as seemless as possible throughout the whole shorts and grippers.

A good idea but design could be better

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I mostly like the suit and I suspect it does improve aerodynamics. I bought a size Small based on the fit information on the web site and it is quite snug but not uncomfortable when I'm on my TT bike. It feels a bit uncomfortable if I'm standing up walking around but I guess that's a common skin suit issue. They are supposed to be snug and they are not meant for standing up.
The material is light and comfortable in hot weather and the suit certainly looks like it should improve aerodynamics but I don't currently have a way to measure that.
As much as I like the suit I cannot give it 5 stars: (1) The zipper feels cheap and it sometimes binds a bit when trying to zip or unzip it. I have encountered this same problem with every piece of Castelli kit I have ever bought. I don't know why they want to put cheap zippers on expensive clothing. (2) The zipper does not go far enough down the torso to make "nature breaks" easy despite what the description says. I was surprised by that because my Velocissimo San Remo, also by Castelli, does have a (just barely) long enough zipper. (3) The fabric is VERY fragile. The first time I wore the suit I lightly brushed my shoulder against the large ring of my bike while putting the bike up on its storage rack and the fabric ripped. I put on some Tenacious Tape as an initial fix and I'll figure out a longer term solution at some point but I am quite concerned that the fabric will not hold up well when I have to pin on race numbers.

Don't pin numbers, use 3M Super77 spay glue. Spray on number, wait 1 minute, press number firmly on jersey. Number can be peeled off after race, residual glue comes off easily with standard paint thinner. More aero, no jersey damage, no finger pricks, faster than pinning.

Great speed/skin suit

I've been shopping from cc for a long time. They are the best. Husband is 5'11" and 155 lbs. and is a medium. He likes a race fit and this is a nice suit as it has pockets and is well ventilated as well as aero fit. He also likes the orange accents to the aesthetic design. He tried other brands and styles but this was one of his favorites. Well done CC! Hope this helps.
