Old Man Winter is coming and he's not making cocoa by the fire. Go out and meet him head-on with the protection and warmth of the Castelli Free Jacket. Let him know that base miles are a must and that nothing he does will stop you from riding.

The Free Jacket was constructed from Windstopper X-Fast 2. This textile was developed by GORE in partnership with Castelli. The result is a windproof, water-resistant, and highly flexible fabric that sets this jacket apart from other winter jackets. Why? Windstopper X-Fast 2 combines the wind and rain protection of a jacket with the fit of a jersey.

Castelli has been pioneering cycling-specific clothing since its introduction of lycra shorts in the 1970's and it knows about fit. Rather than a bulky winter jacket, the Free Jacket was contoured to your body to seal out wind. Panels were cut on a curve so that they sit flat while you are in riding position. The arms were articulated forward, which reduces the amount of fabric bunching up near the elbows. To enhance fit, the side panels were cut from Thermoflex — a fleece backed stretch material that helps the jersey sit against your body without billowing out in the wind. Additionally, the panels provide extra breathability by wicking moisture to the surface to be evaporated. Thermoflex was also used on the flip-up collar and inside of the wrist cuffs to seal out cold air.

To stow your portables, the back features three deep, open pockets. The hem features a silicone grip and a slightly elongated back. The jacket lies against your winter tights without slipping and covers any gap between your waistband and jersey to seal out wind. Castelli also added reflective accents throughout the jacket to enhance your visibility in low-light conditions.

The Castelli Men's Free Jacket is available in six sizes from Small through XXX-Large and in the colors Orange/white, Deep blue/white, and Black/white.

Great jacket for a multitude of uses...

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

This jacket runs tight by design so you may want to go one size up from your normal size. I say this because I use it over another jersey and sometimes arm warmers. It's nicely wind and water resistant. It kept me warm but also was able to breathe well. Great jacket.

I liked it but . . .

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:True to size

I had purchased a Castelli Espresso Due jacket before this and reviewed it on Dec. 11, 2013. I loved it so much, I bought a 2nd one in a different color. And when this Free jacket came up on sale, I bought one. All the fit dimensions seemed identical to the Espresso Due (size Medium - girth, shoulder, underarm, front length, sleeve length, sleeve circumference) -EXCEPT- one dimension, the rear length. It was over 2" longer on the rear. For a taller Medium rider, it would be perfect, but since I am on the shortest end of the medium scale, it extends way below my butt; especially if the pockets are loaded. So I had to return it.

BUT I still give this product a very good review. It is 5-stars for quality, looks, feel. I take away 1-star for that rear length difference with the Espresso Due. And it's a pretty tall order for ANY jacket to compare to the Espresso Due.

I like it

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I rode in this jacket for 35 minutes with a thin stoic wool base layer and CX spandex layer in 35 degrees Fahrenheit, but it was 5-10 colder with wind chill, and wind gusts. Fingers were cold but, Oh, was my body toasty, though not hot. The collar is comfortable as heck, back pockets are big but unobtrusive even with all my stuff in them. I had the black and also the orange. Kept the orange, love the orange, awesome color. Bet I could go 5 -10 colder with just a what I had on. Gotta get better gloves though. Sizing, I am 6'3, 230, muscle-y, 44xl jacket. The 3XL fits awesomely. Almost like a jersey but with space for thin layers. If you're thinking of getting it, do it.
