Description

Feel the difference.

Castelli's ongoing collaboration with the Garmin Pro Tour team has led to continuous refinements to a line of cycling clothing that already has secured its podium spot. Redesigned fabrics, re-engineered panels and fit, new chamois, and new bib design make the Free Aero Kit Version Race Bib short the ideal short for a training ride or a stage race. It is made to match up perfectly with the Castelli Free Jersey.

The beauty of fit and comfort of the Free Aero Kit Race Bib Shorts comes from the targeted use of three main fabrics. First, Castelli developed what they call an Action Micro fabric that is particularly durable and placed it in the saddle contact regions, since those are the areas that get the most regular wear and tear. Energia Micro fabric, with its outstanding stretch and return, is used on the sides and back of the bib shorts, while Breathe Micro fabric is used for the front of the shorts. As its name indicates, the latter has been designed to let the fabric breathe to help keep the legs from overheating when the sun is beating down on a hot day.

No matter how many innovative fabrics are used, the Castelli bibs wouldn't even make it into the suitcase of a pro rider without a superior chamois. The Progetto X2 Air Seat Pad benefits from Castelli's ongoing collaboration with the Garmin as well. The team spent over a year testing this short, and that's a lot of saddle time to ponder how comfort might be improved. The good news was that Castelli had it pretty much right to begin with. The minor improvements that were made included a perforated foam layer being added to the pad. This layer helps to ventilate and keep you cool as it allows air to flow directly onto the surface fabric. It wicks moisture away ensuring that you'll stay dry even on the hottest days. Keeping your nether regions dry is paramount to minimizing chafing and saddle sores. The layer sitting next to your skin is made from a four-way stretch, seamless, bacteriostatic layer designed to move with you, reducing any bunching and friction. The cushioning layer consists of strategically placed, multi-density foam. For good measure, perforated viscous comfort inserts have been added under the highly sensitive ischial and perineal pressure areas, so that your undercarriage will be supremely protected whether you are touring the countryside or training for that gravel road race.

The cut of the shorts ensures that you won't feel stifled in the heat of a summer day. The shape of the bib straps, for example, allows for a very wide opening on the front torso that dips down to the waist. You won't feel hindered by the straps and you'll really appreciate the open-air feeling on hot climbs up mountains in July. Knowing how irritating inner thigh seams can be, Castelli has eliminated them. And what seams do exist have been flat-locked sewn so as to be as unobtrusive as if there were no seams at all.

To avoid pinching that occurs from thick elastic leg grips, Castelli upgraded the hems of the legs by including their Giro3 integrated leg grippers. The generous, 5-centimeter-wide band is knit directly into the shrts and gently compresses to secure the leg hem in place. It also lies completely flat, keeping your leg aero as if it were in a skin suit. As a final touch, Castelli included highly reflective details on the back of the grippers for extra safety.

The Castelli Free Aero Race Bib Shorts are available in Black/lime and Black/red. They come in five sizes, Small through XXX-Large.

Great Chamois, Poor Leg Grippers

Love the fabric and especially the Chamois, but the leg grippers were too big and would not keep the legs in place resulting in uncomfortable bunching at the crotch. I ordered the XL; I'm 6'0", 174.

Awesome bibs

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently made the switch to Castelli gear with the recent sales going on and I should have switched a long time ago! These babies are awesome! Very comfortable and you forget you're wearing them. I realized they solve some comfort issues I didn't even realize my pearl izumi bibs had when I go back between the two. I'd say they fit normal to size. I'm 5'10" @158lbs and I'm a Large in both these and PI bibs. Great buy and top quality. The only problem I'm finding is with that sexy Italian look I'm needing to coordinate my kit better so as to not insult the brand. Two new Castelli jerseys ordered to do just that. :D

Just AWESOME!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I REALLY like these bib tights. I just ordered another pair in the team print. Incredible chamois and the shorts are made of ridiculously comfortable fabric. I am 5'11" 172Lbs and the large fits like it was made for me. These will make you smile! GET SOME!!

Awesome bibs

These are some of the best bibs on the market. The cut is perfect and the chamois is comfortable all day. Im 5'7" 165 lbs and the large fit perfectly, though it could definitely handle someone a bit taller.

Outstanding

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a number of $200 bibs from Capo, Giordana and Garneau, and these are the best of them all. The best thing I can say is that I don't think about my shorts while I'm riding. The chamois is amazing. Thinner than one might expect, but with amazing dampening of road vibrations. The fit is perfect. 5' 6", 155 lbs = medium. Any heavier and you probably want to size up.

These are the only bibs I bought, and then immediately bought another pair. They are that good. I would even buy them in the lime green color, if I had to.

What's the difference between the Aero kit...

What's the difference between the Aero kit version and the Aero team version? I don't race but I like to put in the miles. Would use for 60-100 rides. Thank you CC !

It seems the difference is only in the graphics.
