Feel as tough as the Belgians do.

It's no secret that Flanders is the land of the "hard man." However, even the toughest of cyclists are known to be harboring unseen, secret advantages. However, we're not talking about embrocation, after all, you can smell a Belgian peloton approaching from a kilometer away. No, we're talking about the kind of wind-blocking protection that's derivative of Castelli's Flanders Wind Long Sleeve Base Layer.

To start, the Flanders base layer features multiple fabrics in multiple locations. In other words, Castelli was dedicated to applying the right tool for the job. At the body, the base layer uses a multi-denier (multi-weight) polyester composition. This material was created with a rib-knit, 3D structure that enhances mechanical moisture wicking, while also creating a stretchable, conforming fit around the torso. However, it's important to note that this design essentially creates channels that keep the fabric largely off of your skin. Ultimately, this reduces, if not eliminates, the threat of abrasion.

And, to fulfill its namesake, this base layer features a membrane of Gore's patented WindStopper. This material is completely windproof, which cuts out most of autumn's chill. So, as Castelli puts it, you're able to look tough from the outside but stay comfortable inside.

At the underarms, a natural evacuation point for excess core heat exhaust, Castelli placed a perforated mesh polyester. And, as you probably guessed, perforation equates to ventilation. As a result, your body temperature remains well-regulated, which prevents the threat of overheating. For the sleeves, Castelli retained the lightweight polyester theme of the base layer, only the fabric used here features a four-way stretch. This way, you're guaranteed an uncompromising freedom of movement.

Further along with the construction, you'll find that Castelli only used four-needle flatlock stitching throughout. This construction method equates to a lower-profile seam and a flat stitch. And, as a result, the base layer lays closer to the body, which makes for increased moisture management and no chafing. Lastly, Castelli sought to ensure that your body obtains total coverage, and to do so, it incorporated a mock turtleneck and an flat finished, elongated back.

The Castelli Flanders Wind Long Sleeve Base Layer is available in the color White and in five sizes from X-Small to XX-Large. Please note that Castelli recommends this base layer for a temperature range of 50 to 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Just right

  • Fit: True to size

This does exactly what it claims. It cuts the wind in the chest area and is jsut right for days that are cold but not too cold. I have worn it a number of times in 39 - 50 degrees with a summer cycling jersey on top and I have not been too cold or too hot. Great base layer!

It works

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It does the job it was designed for very well. The neck opening is a little tight and stiff, making it harder to remove, but that's an expected consequence of the wind-jamming fabric used on its front; decent wind blocking fabrics aren't too flexible. The sizing is typical for Castelli.

Great piece of kit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I love the windstopping base layers. Previously, I've been a fan of the Craft shirts (which are way awesome), but the flanders shirt is every bit as good and even has a few things that set it apart. First, the pits are very well vented. Second, the it's not as warm as the WS Zero, which is a real blessing if you want to go hard and not get sopping wet.

As far as fit, others are correct. The neck is very narrow and can be hard to get over your head. Once on its nice and snug.

I have the short sleeve version of the Flanders wind layer...one of my favorite base layers. I also purchased the Flanders long sleeve (same size) without the windstopper material and had the same tight neck issue. Must have something to do with the low cut mock design and the material. The material around the neck hardly stretches like my Craft base layers.

tight fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have three different wind blocking shirts but this was the first from Castelli. It so far has worked well to block the cold on my morning bike rides and is more comfortable then some of the other shirts. The fit is very tight and I have to work to get it over my head. I bought the large and I am 5' 10' and 175. There is no way I would fit in a medium.

Great base layer.

What a bad ass piece of kit. I have used other wind shirts that don't have near the flexibility of the Flanders. The neck is snug but the rest is true to Castelli sizing-- in other words one size up from your normal.
Turn a normal jersey or non wind block jacket into great cold weather gear. I would recommend it for use in sub 50 degree weather and layer it up for the colder temps.

Strange fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

I'm 5'5", 150 lbs, and wear size 36 jackets. I usually wear Castelli in medium for jerseys and bibs. The medium fit very loose. Tried the small and couldn't get my head through.

Had to return it :-(

Looked like a fine product with beautiful packaging. WIshed it would have fit.

Take off your helment when you slip this over your head!

Cyclocross Must Have

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

This is the first thing I grab after my Skin suit for Cyclocross!

This ting keeps you warm, and then the wind break right through the skin suit, the windstopper material prevents your sweat form freezing! Which up here in Wisco, can be a huge problem!

But as all castelli gear goes, it runs tight!

A great base layer for windy conditions

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been using the Flanders for a little over a month, in conditions between 40 and 60 degrees. I'm used to riding in wind from 10-30 mph, so 50 can be fairly chilly. I can use this with just a jersey in most conditions over 45, and I tested it out with a light jacket in the upper 30's/low 40's.

What I like best is that this is a little thicker material than most base layers - even thermal base layers. That extra thickness really keeps the cold weather off your skin with a minimal jersey or shell. I don't feel I have to wear tons of layers to stay warm.

Make sure you size up. I'm 6'1'' and 205, and normally have used an XL but had to trade for an XXL to be comfortable.

I've initially only given it 4 stars until I see how it responds to laundering, shrinkage, etc.

Just wanted to amend my review. Still getting great use out of this base layer. Through multiple launderings (still allowing to hang dry) this unit has kept it's shape - especially its length, which is a concern with my other base layers. Two things to note: the neck is tight. Which is good for keeping the elements out, but can be hard to get over your head. Though, the layer is not uncomfortable. Secondly, the sleeves are tight but do stretch a little bit. These garments are for a slimmer body, even the XXL. I don't have a true cyclist's physique - I've got some bulk to my arms and legs. Just a warning. If you've ever been to the gym, know anybody who's been to the gym, or driven by a gym, this layer might be a little tight on the arms. Just know Castelli is a trimmer fit. Still love the garment, would probably even bump my rating to 4.5 *'s.
