Description

To say that we get excited any time that a new item is added to Castelli's Rosso Corsa line would be an understatement. However, we know that our cycling love runs especially deep when that item is a base layer. In our defense, though, a proper base layer is one of the single most important pieces of winter apparel that you should own. Knowing this, Castelli created the Flanders Base Layer to be its most sophisticated fall/winter base layer to date.

To start, the Flanders base layer features multiple fabrics in multiple locations. In other words, Castelli was dedicated to applying the right tool for the job. At the body, the base layer uses a multi-denier (multi-weight) polyester composition. This material was created with a rib-knit, 3D structure that enhances mechanical moisture wicking, while also creating a stretchable, conforming fit around the torso. However, it's important to note that this design essentially creates channels that keep the fabric largely off of your skin. Ultimately, this reduces, if not eliminates, the threat of abrasion.

At the underarms, a natural evacuation point for excess core heat exhaust, Castelli placed a perforated mesh polyester. And, as you probably guessed, perforation equates to ventilation. As a result, your body temperature remains well-regulated, which prevents the threat of overheating. For the sleeves, Castelli retained the lightweight polyester theme of the base layer, only the fabric used here features a four-way stretch. This way, you're guaranteed an uncompromising freedom of movement.

Further along with the construction, you'll find that Castelli only used four-needle flatlock stitching throughout. This construction method equates to a lower-profile seam and a flat stitch. And, as a result, the base layer lays closer to the body, which makes for increased moisture management and no chafing. Lastly, Castelli sought to ensure that your body obtains total coverage, and to do so, it incorporated a crew neck and an elongated back.

The Castelli Flanders Base Layer is available in the color White and in six sizes from X-Small to XX-Large. Please note that Castelli recommends this base layer for a temperature range of 50-68 degrees Fahrenheit.

The short sleeved Castelli Flanders Base Layer has been a key piece for me this spring. It is unobtrusive under close-fitting cycling jackets like the Castelli Alpha, long sleeve jerseys, and short sleeve jerseys alike. It does exactly what it is supposed to, pulling sweat away from the skin. All my long-sleeve base layers have been dormant for since February, while this one has been washed and worn often.

Great Base Layer

  • Fit: True to size

I've worn this 3 times as a base layer under a Gabba 2 long sleeve jersey with the lowest temp 37 degrees. It is soft and warm and I've ordered a second one plus the long sleeve version. Fit is good, I'm 6'1", 179 and XXL is a good fit.

Not Durable

I wish I could give this a good rating. It's comfortable and fits well, but the mesh fabric in the underarm area is so delicate that it snags easily and has already developed a hole after only 3 uses.

Way too delicate for active wear. Time to get out my needle and thread.

Not Durable

I had the same underarm issue with the long sleeve version. The mesh fabric is a great concept, but tends to tear when stretched. At least it's not visible when worn. Given it's made by Castelli, I'm surprised in this design flaw.

Great for cooler days

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ride in Southern California where it never gets too cold for serious jackets. This is great for cooler days or cold mornings where the high for the day is only 70. It is good enough to give you than morning chill protection with a vest on the way to the group ride. At the same time, I don't have to remove it later in the ride because of heat issues. I simply take my vest off and I'm good to go.

Been getting a ton of use lately.

The best

This would have to be one the best base layers around, and for a top price. Great in the cold and the heat, perfect when hammering those long climbs
