An evolution in comfort

While bib style shorts are the norm among professional riders, there are plenty of cyclists who prefer to be unencumbered by straps. Yet, the absence of straps shouldn't equate to an absence of fit or using less technologically advanced fabrics. Castelli's Evoluzione Shorts were inspired by the Castelli Progetto Y Short, one of its original designs that turned the world of cycling apparel on its head. they prove that you don't need bibs to be comfortable.

Unlike many non-bib shorts which are constructed from inexpensive lycra, the Evoluzione shorts use Castelli's ProDry2Strati fabric. This fabric features a two-layer construction which wicks moisture from your skin to the exterior of the shorts so that it quickly evaporates to keep you dry. The shorts were sewn from 8 panels which were curved to conform to your body while you are in riding position. Additionally, double needle stitching means that the shorts are durable so that you can put them through their paces. The leg openings feature in-mold silicone leg grippers which keep the shorts securely in place.

Castelli is known for its chamois. The Kiss Air, which is used in the Evoluzione short, is no exception. This insert features a soft, brushed microfiber top to rest comfortably against your skin. This layer is seamlessly engineered so as to eliminate chafing and abrasion. Additionally, the insert has been designed with a flexible shape that moves with you. Dual density provides maximum thickness in the ischial zone and it tapers to moderate thickness in the perineal zone and minimum thickness at the perimeter. In this manner your nether regions are padded without feeling like they are swathed in a diaper. It has been bacteriostatically treated so that saddle sores and friction are minimized.

The Castelli Evoluzione Shorts are available in six sizes from Small to XXX-large and in two colors: Black/white and Black.

Comfortable shorts

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

Feels and looks great, runs a bit small but doesn't bother me. The only issue is that the Castelli red sticker started coming off the shorts the first time I used it.

Quite snug

  • Fit: Runs small

My first impression after one 3 hour ride is that these shorts are quite snug. The sizing called for me to buy an XL. The XL is as tight as I would want the shorts to be. That said, the padding is very effective. This is just a first impression after one wearing but I'm sure that I will like these shorts for the long haul.

Lightweight- great for summer riding

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: medium

Enjoy these shorts for summer riding. They are lightweight and sit low on my hips. They are tighter than some of my other Medium shorts (Sugoi, Hincapi). The Chamois is great for 4 hour rides. Only down side to these shorts is that they fray on the bottoms. I don't put them in the dryer. I would still buy another pair because i like the fit, but I expect the life to be short on these shorts.

Great chamois, but ...

Like the previous reviewer, my experience was that the leg grippers (which are glued to the lycra, not sewn) came off after the third washing. Doesn't mean Castelli's stuff is 'bad', I love their jerseys and maybe their other shorts are great, but this model might be best passed on. Oh, I was just into the large on their sizing chart, but found a large to be snug, about the same as Pearl Izumi medium.

More of a customer service review

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I got these for my husband and after one wear and wash, one of the leg bands came off. We didn't have the receipt. I called and CC will ship out new ones with no shipping charge, and I'll get a refund when I return the defective ones, again with no shipping charge. Excellent customer service! My husband loved these. He's 6' 155 and got a medium. Perfect fit, and great comfort on a 3 hour ride. Got them in black & white and they couldn't look better.

    Riding Position

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

An important note about these shorts: They are designed for the riding position. This means when you are out of the saddle they seem a bit low-rise. However, this design works well in keeping the waistband from bunching up. It takes a little getting used to though. Your natural instinct is to pull them up, but if you let them fall into place anatomically, they fit and perform great with no bunching or slipping. The chamois feels supportive yet not too obstrusive; it has a gradual thickness that is thickest where the sit bones meet the seat. As far as fit goes, I think it is spot on. I have a 34" waist and the Large fits me snug, but nonrestrictive. The only fear I have are the scorpion decals; I'm hoping they stay put and don't peel off, but so far, so good.

You're right on with the sizing. I have a 35" waist and they are a bit more than snug but that may be due to the size of my arse. Castelli shorts feel more supportive of muscles than other brands.
