Description

Lightweight, stretchy, and breathable for your longest, coldest rides

Ladies, do you find yourself wanting for a winter riding jacket that is warm yet lightweight? A jacket that is designed for you and not the pink and shrink version of your male riding partners? Castelli's Elemento 7X Air Jacket sets a new standard in women's jackets, balancing light weight and stretch with breathability and warmth.

Although its Maggia jacket provides warmth and flexibility for cold weather riding, Castelli invented the 7xAir fabric which is just as warm as the Windstopper X-Fast, but more breathable. It is a multi-layer fabric that bonds a fully wind and waterproof external shell to a fleece inner layer. The result is an extremely stretchy wind-resistant fabric. The stitch used to bond the layers, however, creates permeability for a continuous exchange of air from the inside to outside of the fabric. This carries away moisture keeping you dry. The only downside is that rain will come right through the perforated stitches. While we wouldn't wear it in a downpour, the jacket is treated with a DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating and will shed light spray.

In addition, the Elemento jacket features WindShear inserts at the shoulders and arms, the spots that are hit worst by chilling wind. A flip-up, Thermoflex collar keeps your neck warm, and jacquard elastic at the hem keeps the jacket from shifting up over your hips exposing your back to the cold. And, because Castelli knows that women ride as long as men do, the Elemento includes three generous rear pockets and reflective tabs for those days when the sun seems to set too soon.

Designed specifically to fit women, the Elemento was tapered at the waist to reduce fabric bulk and given proportionately narrower shoulders. At the same time it pulls down over your hips so that you won't have to tug at it every time you stop at a light.

The Castelli Elemento Jacket is available in sizes X-Small to X-Large and in the colors: White/black, Green fluo/white, and Black.

Worth the investment

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've suffered through several winters and blown $$$ trying to find the right jacket to no avail. Decided to dole out the cash in the hopes of something that will give a modicum of comfort through tough Michigan winters... and this is the jacket! With a base layer, this thing is great in dry conditions down to 20 degrees. Add a jersey and you're easily comfortable down to 10 for 3+ hours. Completely wind proof. Not waterproof, so if you're stuck in rain under 40 degrees, be sure to have waterproof cover or you will not have a good time. I saw other people talk about sizing and I risked going too small. I'm 5'6", 130# and went for the small. It's very fitting but I can get a jersey and base layer on with no restriction on movement. (I do prefer a tight fit, though.) Pockets are secure. Picture of the neck covering is a little misleading (does not stay up) but that shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Awesome!! 25F with only a base layer!

* * * WARMTH * * *
I bought this jacket for New York weather. I got to wear it in 25-50°F weather with ONLY a base layer and was warm the whole time despite wind, no sun, light flurries in the air and descending. On the warmer days with sun I was the perfect temperature thanks to the breathable nature of the fabric. I can't wait to try this jacket out in the southern California weather on those cooler mornings. Note: I did NOT try this in rainy weather and I probably wouldn't because it's not actually waterproof.

* * * SIZING * * *
This is where stuff gets wonky. I ordered a S even though my measurements were for a XS since I always have sizing issues with cycling clothing. Once trying it on I regretted not going with the sizing chart and buying the XS so I overnight shipped the XS. The XS fit perfectly in the body but like almost every other jacket/jersey, etc. that is women's specific... the shoulders were TOO narrow. I have a very slim chest and torso and normal sized shoulders for my height (5'7) so this was to be expected and I ended up just keeping the S. Overall I'd say read the sizing chart. The jacket is true to size and I could have definitely comfortably fit a couple layers under the XS sans the shoulder situation.

Worth It!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've done some rides in this jacket with air temps of 30-40 degrees with one to two layers underneath and I stay snuggly warm. It's magical how it wicks sweat but still feels breathable compared to other wind proof jackets I've worn. When I first put it on, I was unsure about the cut, but then I bent over into bike position and it's cut perfectly! I wear an XS is almost everything but in Castelli I tend to size up, especially if layering. I went with Small and it's just right. The tall collar is awesome. Never dreamt I would spend this kind of $$ on a cycling jacket, sure glad I did. Love.

Best. Jacket. Ever.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ride a lot, and I have a lot of cycling clothes, but this jacket is pure magic. It is both amazingly warm and breathable, plus it looks sharp. I'm 5'3", 113#, I purchased a size medium. I probably could wear a size small and it would be more snug, but even though I generally like snug cycling clothes, I prefer this to be a little larger for base layers. I have enough room for significant layering (although I can't imagine needing it, it is so warm), yet it isn't baggy. Worth every penny.
