If you love wool as a baselayer, but are looking for something in a little heavier knit, Castelli's Dolomite Long Sleeve Base Layer is the perfect midwight blend.

Merino wool is a naturally hydrophillic fiber. This means that it has the ability to hold as much as 30 percent of its weight in water before exuding a feeling of wetness. Additionally, it's anti-microbial so that you won't stink after hours on the bike — no matter how much you sweat. The blend of polyester and elastane in the Dolomite keeps the base layer fitting close to the skin, which helps it wick moisture away. It was designed with a crewneck and flat lock seam construction for comfort.

The Castelli Dolomite Long Sleeve Base Layer is available in sizes Small through XX-Large in the color Anthracite.

A special garment

First, the sizing: Typical Castelli sizing. Size up one. I'm 5'10" and 190 lbs. The XL is the correct size. Plenty of length in the arms. Just enough room in the shoulders.

The looks, quality, and stitching on this Castelli baselayer is fantastic. The quality (and warmth) of the medium-weight wool is really impressive. The flat lock stitching fantastic. Lastly, this piece comes in a box fitting of fine jewelry. Really.

I love wool base-layering for cycling in <50* weather, Wool insulates the best. Wool wicks moisture the best. Wool creates zero sweat odor. Zero. Wool is a super fabric!

Highest recommendation. Hand wash. Flat/air dry.

Note: Consider the version with the 1/4 front zipper too. It's 0-$10 more. I use it to vent and dump heat when needed. Especially useful at the end of a cold morning ride.

Great cold-weather gear!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I'm 5'10, 170 lbs with a 42" jacket size and the size L of the Dolomite fits me perfectly. It just hit -5 degrees on the west coast (winter of 2014) and my Smartwool base layer works fine, but this one just fits the bill under my matching Castelli Mortirolo Jacket, yes, you read correctly - one layer of this Dolomite under my winter jacket and I stayed warm. Definitely recommended, and the fact that there is no foul odour after the ride was an added bonus.

Great base layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

First real base layer I've had, but it has worked out beautifully for me. The size fits pretty small (as I expected), but fits well (I ordered the size I normally fit in jerseys ). I live in Southern CA, so while I may not experience the same kind of winter temperatures as the rest of the country, the shirt does a great job in keeping me warm at the beginning of my morning ride, but while giving me enough ventilation and breatheability as it warms up. Very comfortable and would definitely recommend this to others.

Flanders or Dolomite?

Can any comment on which of these two products is heavier (with respect to warmth/insulation). I am looking for a light/thin base layer.

Responded on

The Flanders is lighter weight. Go with that one.

Small, but Great

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

High quality, breathable and warm. But, as with most Castelli products, very small, even for the fit American. I'm 6'2", 185 lb. I wear the XXL. It barely fits, mostly too short, but overall performs extremely well. Wool is the way to go.

Awesome Base Layer for Winter

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

This should end up being my new go to Base Layer for cold fall/winter rides in the Salt Lake Valley. For starters, the packaging Castelli ships it in gives you the feeling you're buying a high end electronic and not a base layer. Inside the eloquent packaging lies a comfy warm, but not too bulky base layer that fits snugly as a moisture wicking, core temperature maintaining layer. I'm 5'10'', 160 lbs. and found the medium to fit perfectly.

What is your chest size? Thanks,
