Toasty ears.

Keep your noggin warm and dry with a dash of classic Euro style this winter in the Castelli Difesa Cap. Panels of the breathable, quick-drying Windstopper X-Lite fabric on the front and sides boast a water-repellant finish to fend off chilly wind and water, while a soft Nano Flex rear panel and flip-down ear flaps provide warm moisture management to prevent cold, clammy situations. At the front, a visor peeks out from under your helmet to keep rain and snow out of your eyes for good visibility on cold, drizzly days.

So far, so good.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Only one size.

I've been wearing my new CASTELLI DIFESA CAP while riding for several weeks and find it to be perfect so far. The temperatures where I live have been in the mid-30s (degrees F) in the early morning when I go riding and at that temperature, its exactly what I need. Fits nicely under my helmet, covers my ears entirely and keeps my head warm, but not hot. Perfect. I ride in the morning about 5 days a week and put on about 200 miles per month on my bike. It's autumn here, right now. I'll update this review when I've used it in some cold winter weather.

NW Perfect

Reviews ran 50/50 for sizing (too small/just right) but the product's features seemed to fit what I wanted for riding in the Seattle area. We just had the wettest October in Seattle (9"). When it's raining I'm usually wearing my Gore or Tempesta cap with a skull cap under a Giro Synthe whether commuting or on weekend rides. The caps with the skull cap are too hot and worn singly, the caps don't cover my ears and the skull cap gets soaked. Given I don't have much hair on top anymore, this cap, I thought, could bridge the gap.

Difesa fits the bill, so to speak. My ears are covered with Nanoflex which is water resistant yet breathes nicely. There's just a single layer of Windstopper on top which has a nice balance of water resistance and breathability. There's no seam sealing: the Difesa isn't a rain cap. You buy it for the same reason you bought Gabba/Perfetto. Best of all, it went through some of the heaviest rain here and came through much better than I had hoped.

I'm in. Just ordered a second Difesa.

Regarding sizing: my Synthe is a large and the Difesa fits my largish head perfectly.

Solid Cap For Cool-to-Cold

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I have a round-ish 57cm-diameter head and the Difesa cap fully covers my ears and comes down low enough on my forehead to keep me warm during moderate output riding in temperatures from the 20s to 40s. The Windstopper X-lite used in the hat is not a toasty or bulky material, but it keeps the wind/rain/snow off admirably.
