Let's face it, a dependable jacket makes the difference between sitting at home and riding your bike on a rainy day. However, while many jacket makers make claims of waterproofness and breathability, a select few actually exert the time and money to test these claims. Not surprisingly, Castelli is one of these rare breeds, and its new Confronto Jacket proves just what a little obsessive TLC will do.

To make the Confronto jacket your go-to for wet weather riding, Castelli constructed it from the Torrent 2L fabric. This material is completely waterproof, wind-resistant, and highly breathable. And while we're always hesitant to support claims of waterproofness and breathability, this material has a water column rating of 10000mm and a Moisture Vapor Perspiration (MVP) of 8000. Additionally, Castelli has also taped the critical seams of the jacket, included at the high collar, and installed a waterproof zipper in order to keep water from trickling in unexpectedly. For breathability, Castelli placed two large ventilation ports on the rear portion of the jacket. Together, the fabric's attributes and characteristics provide a level of protection that keeps water from getting in, but rapidly assists its getting out.

Just as importantly, Torrent 2L was selected for its high degree of stretch. As a result, the Confronto provides a hard-shell level of protection with the feel and freedom of movement of a softshell jacket. This clever system of protection also accentuates the purposeful cut and fit of the Confronto. Essentially, the jacket's shape has been cut to mirror the body in the cycling position. So, you'll notice that the back has been elongated with the sleeves. This way, the annoyance of fabric bunching and pulling has been eliminated while you're on the hoods or in the drops. Now, there's no chafing or seam abrasion, and Castelli even took the extra step of lining the jacket in breathable mesh in order to ensure this.

The Castelli Confronto Jacket is available in six sizes from Small to XXX-Large and in the colors Black, Black/yellow fluo, and White/red.

Here's what others have to say...

Great rain jacket

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

This is a fantastic cold weather or rain jacket; it is not for a cool or simply windy day.

It is completely waterproof, including taped seams, and also includes a mesh liner to keep the protective layer off of your skin to keep you warmer.

All in all, fantastic rain cape; just don't expect it to be light.

It's pretty good

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large

First couple of times it got wet it beads the water and sheds it pretty good. Now it's just absorbing water but there's two layers. The waterproofing isn't failing, just the hydrophobic spray they used. Still stay absolutely dry. The vents are an awesome addition for extra breathing. Mesh liner so you can slip stuff into the vents when you don't really need quick access to it. I would recommend it. I'm a little over 5'7" and 143 lbs and I got the size small and fits perfect.

Sizing is different than other Castelli

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs large

Just a quick note for those considering this jacket...

I'm pretty much a perfect Large in Castelli short and long sleeve jerseys and baselayers, 5'10", 152, 40" chest. They fit snug and aero like they're supposed to.

Based on reviews I got this jacket in Medium, however. Even so it still has plenty of room for a base layer or two and one of those long sleeve jerseys. Maybe all Castelli jackets are like this, but it's a very different sizing experience from their other tops.

I'm 186cm / 74kg, and like all my Castelli tops in M (jerseys being snug like they should), the Confronto being no exception. It has room for one or two baselayers, which I'm finding in accordance with this product's "jacket" designation.

Great Jacket

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I'm 6'1", 200 lbs.... Ordered the XXL and like the fit. It's got some room and the sleeves are long enough when stretched out on the bike. I usually have issues with sleeve length, so I like the fit of this jacket. Probably could have squeezed into the XL, but length would have been a bit short. Does well with wind and rain and fits a base layer underneath for added warmth.

Are there rear pockets on the jacket?

It is easy, however, to lift the jacket to access jersey pockets.

I wear a large in Pearl Izumi jerseys and...

I wear a large in Pearl Izumi jerseys and jackets and they all fit great. 6' and 185lbs, wear 34 waist pants. My Castelli tights fit snug but well in a large size - what size in this jacket would fit best, large or XL?

Best Answer

I am a similar build: 180cm, 85kg.

My nano flex bib-knickers are XL.

I wear a Large Gabba LS jersey, Pocket Liner and Confronto jacket.

The Confronto is easily the more generous of the three.

Try the large.

It is my go to commuter jacket in the winter when I start and finish in the dark.

Thanks, I ended up not waiting and got an XL based on the sizing chart - A large would probably fit well but the XL has some room for layering which is great too.

Lightweight AND Waterproof!

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I bought this to replace my all purpose lightweight rain jacket. I live in Pac NW so rain can be expected most of the year. I've only ridden in light rain so far but it seems to be waterproof so far. For temperatures 45 and below, I think this will be perfect, with appropriate layering. It is windproof and the vents do the job. I purchased the men's version as i liked the colors, black, yellow patch in back, yellow strips on velcro sleeves at wrist. Wide reflective stripes full length of sleeves as well as neck down, along zipper. I ordered the men's small. I am 5'4, 125 lbs and the fit is perfect, allowing for a light fleece underneath if needed. It is not blocky, with a slight curvy fit. The down side is there us not a single pocket. It is a bit to large to fit in a jersey pocket, but I think it could be stuffed across two of them.

is the white Castelli Confronto Jacket all white as shown in this picture ?

It sure is, it also has the same silver stripe across the shoulders and down the arms as shown on the picture of the back of the black version.

For recreational riders logging many KMs...

For recreational riders logging many KMs in cold and wet conditions -- Gabba long-sleeve jersey OR Gabba convertible jacket OR Confronto jacket??

Best Answer

Go with the Gabba convertible jacket - best :)

The Gabba stuff is amazing for racing, or going hard enough for the body to warm itself. It will only keep off the worst (wind)chill, but you'll not stay very warm in cold wet conditions.

For recreational riding in bad weather, I would strongly suggest an actual jacket, such as the Confronto, over "Gabba" gear.
