But that certainly is not what Castelli had in mind when it coined the phrase to describe this line of high-quality cycling wear. The shorts on the Body Paint Bib Shorts are formed from a single piece of seamless fabric for a naturally supportive fit. The short feels like it is hugging you perfectly in any position, thanks to this anatomic fit and the as well as a highly compressive fabric. This smooth fit, combined with the aero dimples employed in the material, make this is the most aerodynamic bib short on the market. Castelli engineered the dimples into the fabric to induce flow separation and reduce aerodynamic drag. Think of it as the clothing equivalent for the Zipp rim dimples.
Virtually no seams also means that there are fewer places to irritate your body and there are fewer opportunities for a wardrobe malfunction to occur. After all, who hasn't experienced a perfectly good pair of shorts coming apart at the seams?
The upper portion of the bibs is made from the special Giro2 Bib Straps, a single strip of Giro fabric that is very soft and stretchy. Castelli has eliminated the Lycra trim that typically edges bib straps and more often than not cuts into your shoulders to cause discomfort. The new mesh on the back will help keep your torso cool by allowing air to circulate. Likewise, the updated Giro3 integrated leg grippers have been intelligently fashioned so that the grip material has been knit directly into the short. The generous 5 cm wide band gently compresses to secure the leg hem in place. It also lies completely flat, keeping your leg as aero as if it were in a skin suit.
Perhaps nothing in these bib shorts has benefited as much from Castelli's association with professional cycling teams as the Progetto X2 Air Seat Pad. The Garmin-Cervelo team spend a year testing this short; that's a lot of saddle time to be thinking about how comfort could be improved. Since Castelli had it pretty right to begin with, there wasn't much more than tweaking going on. What it has done is add a perforated foam layer to the pad to help ventilate and keep the nether regions cooler by allowing air to flow directly onto the surface fabric. That layer sitting next to your skin is made from a four-way stretch, seamless, bacteriostatic layer designed to move with you, reducing any bunching and friction. The cushioning layer consists of strategically placed, multi-density foam. For good measure, perforated viscous comfort inserts have been added under the highly sensitive ischial and perineal pressure areas, so that your undercarriage will be supremely protected whether you are out on a two-hour weekday jaunt or training over cobbles for Roubaix.

The shorts in general are fantastic. I've been wearing several different versions of these shorts for the last two years so I've gotten to know them pretty well. The fit is excellent with no sagging or extra material flapping anywhere. The straps are thin and lay flat against the torso very well indeed. The reasons as to why I not giving them five stars are as follows: One, the chamois is great, but it still doesn't beat the chamois that Assos use on their shorts; and two, they really could use a silicone backed elastic gripper on the bottom of the legs. This is actually my biggest flaw to point out in these shorts. After some time the fabric starts to curl upwards at the bottom of the legs! Not a cool look. I'm going to try to alter the shorts as I'd like to keep using them.
Love the shorts, and the bottom portion are definitely great. Not in love with the straps. They're so thin in the name of weight savings, that they bunch under the jersey. My Capo Padrone Bibs and my Zero RH+ PW Revo bibs have thicker straps that definitely feel better. Thinner and lighter in hot weather than the Free Aero Race bibs, but I tend to like those better.
I've tried almost every high-end bib short and so far the body paint takes the prize. A key for me is the fit, how the chamois feels like it becomes part of your body. Everything is perfect, but ordering at least one size up is essential. --I'm 5'10" & 147 lbs and I had to get a MEDIUM. If you ride long and have issues with comfort then look no further. I plan on riding the annual double century again in these babies to really put it them to the test (my LG Mondo's didn't do it for me last year).
Little new to riding, so may not know any diffrent. But I love mine and wish I would have bought more when they were on sale! They have great compression on the legs, and dont move. Feels like a second skin, almost a little too thin for me. They may be a little too see through for me:) I am 5'9" 195 lbs, XL is perfect. Straps are not even noticable when riding. Racked up about 200 miles in them know, and still holding up great.
It wasn't until I went for my first ride in these bibs that I discovered I have been missing out on a level of comfort in my riding. I thought my Sugoi RS bibs were great but they can not compare to the Body Paint! Chamois is perfect with padding where is should be and none where it shouldn't be. The bibs just form to your body and doesn't bunch at all when in the drops. I'm 5'-8 152lbs and the medium is perfect.
Is there a recommended size for the following body size/type: 6'-2", 34-in waist, 175lb with relatively thin quads at the hem/gripper location that often makes these non-silcon type grippers slide up my quad, resulting in a shorten amount of bibs covering the legs
I absolutely love these bibs. Super comfortable and the fabric breathes really well in the Texas heat. The straps are quite comfortable and even after spending 6 1/2 hours on the bike I didn't feel them at all. I am 6' and weight 170 lbs and the large fits perfect. I also love the leg length, not too long but not too short.
The tight fit makes the shorts slightly more difficult to get on. That said, they provide a firm grip and compression on the leg without an uncomfortable grip. Nice light mesh bib straps. At 5'8" / 142lbs the size small is the right fit.
Specifically, what are the differences between this and the previous body paint bibs?
I would like to see a pic of the front portion of the Chamois to see if they fixed that seam problem...not sure why they didn't use a flat seam here. There is a V shape seam in the "junk area" that pressed into me on the initial body paint bib.
Has the edge of the Chamois been refined or is it still abrupt? See photo, this caused some irritation for me on the initial Body Paint version.
I am curious if this was a large enough problem for Castelli to address. I have not heard of many people having this issue. I personally have not had any issues but I would not complain if they do make it a flat seam.
