Castelli's brand-defining Aero Race 5.1 Full-Zip Jersey for men makes a triumphant return this year without giving a second thought towards settling for complacency. The foundational jersey is back with all of the aerodynamic properties it's known for plus an added focus on comfort and longevity. In some manner, Castelli's entire line of impeccably-cut apparel has been influenced by the superior fit and function of the Aero Race, and 2016's model promises to live up to — and possibly exceed — the legacy of its predecessors.

Velocity fabric once again takes a large chunk of credit for the jersey's wind-cheating properties, as the jersey's front is entirely constituted of the dimpled synthetic. Extremely fast-drying, the lightweight fabric helps the jersey achieve its impossibly low claimed weight of 103g, which is about 40g lighter than a standard jersey. The tight weave of Velocity's fibers efficiently works to guide air over the shoulders and reduce drag, and — in Castelli's constant quest for improvement — this year's updated version of the fabric manages to reportedly save an additional two watts compared to last year's during wind tunnel testing.

The back and sleeves of the Aero Race receive a 3D mesh construction rather than Velocity, which breathes remarkably well and features the same dimpled texturing as the front portion of the jersey. This increases the fibers' effective surface area without adding mass, allowing for increased wicking and even faster evaporation. While it might sound contradictory for us to tout the jersey's cool-weather capabilities, this quick-drying fabric does wonders in warding off a damp chill in spring or fall.

Despite the Aero Race's focus on remaining featherweight and aerodynamic, Castelli does include three rear pockets, inlaid in a compressive band that allows them to stay streamlined and as close to your body as possible, even when you have them filled with an assortment of tubes and gels on training rides. A mix of standard, but still appreciated, features like a full-length zipper for temperature control, silicone gripper to hold the bottom hem in place, and reflective accents ensure that this race-focused piece remains incredibly practical for everyday use.

terrible experience

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

i it is so small. i choose the size 3xl and i put the new one with my old 2xl jersey. the old one is like 3 sizes larger than your jersey. the experience is so terrible. why you make your jersey like this. not everyone can have the shape like the pro rider. but you can not deprive our experience. it is so terrible!!!. i will never buy your product anymore. it is so bad!!! and the size chat above is not real.
i send the the mail to castelli and they answer me like this.
Compared to other brands, Castelli does run small as we use Italian sizing and base our patterns off of their sizing. We generally say to size up one size from your normal size to accommodate for the difference. I’ve attached our US size chart for you to reference. If you feel like this piece is defective or out of spec we can have you send it in for evaluation. I’m not familiar with Craft, or what that jersey is, but the FAR 5.1 is one of our most race cut, compressive jerseys meant to be skin tight. We definitely make other jerseys that are cut looser, and are less compressive. By looking at Craft’s size chart it is apparent that our sizing is quite a bit different than theirs. A 3XL in our sizing translates to an XL in theirs.
the size is so ridiculous. if you don't have a pro shape. you can't use it :)

terrible experience

Not certain about this one

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large

This jersey was itchy when first put on, but that feeling lessened after a wash or two. I ended up returning the jersey because the material on the back started ripping around the area where the pockets are stitched to the back. I have had other Castelli jerseys that have last me for year and never had this issue, so I don't think it was just me being agro. The jersey definitely fit nicely and did well on high heat and long rides. Standard for Castelli sizing. Tight while you are standing around, but just right in the saddle.

Aero to Go

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Jersey's material is breathable, perfectly fitted, and comfortable. The design and colors are superb. One size larger would have possibly been a better choice for me, but if I take a deep breath before zipping up the jersey, then I'm good to go.

Size and Material Disappointing

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I'm 5'9, 151 and found the medium size much too small. The shirt, made in El Salvador, felt scratchy and the stitching was poor quality. The previous jersey I bought from Comp Cyclist was a Pearl Izumi (made in China) and was excellent in quality and size.

Great Product

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

I really like how the jersey contours to your body. It's one of the better fitting jerseys i've ridden in. The upper part hugs your shoulders really nicely making sure no excess fabric is in the wind. The lower part of the jersey is extremely long and often went down farther than i liked.
