Description

No frogs were harmed in the making of the Volta.

In a sense, the Capo Padrone kit was an experiment of sorts. It was a bold statement that was fundamentally shaped around its innovative fabric stories and unique construction, without being dependent on overwrought graphical prowess. With the ATS Volta Bib Shorts, Capo spurred that creativity to the next level. They poured on an unabashed dose of racy Italian styling and pulled out all the stops to source the absolute best fabrics and advanced manufacturing techniques in creating an emphatic foray into the market of truly top-tier bib shorts.

In creating a bib short that defied convention, Capo had to completely re-think their design and production processes from the ground up. The goal was to create a garment of superior quality, comfort, performance, and protection, therefore run-of-the-mill polyester or pedestrian blends of Lycra would not be good enough. Thus, the Advanced Technology System (or 'ATS') was born. The idea behind ATS was simple: Capo would create their next generation of ride-enhancing cycling garments by combining the most technical Swiss and Italian fabrics they could find with the most advanced production methods available. You could think of ATS as a bit of Italian mad science; a highly polished experiment in conceptual performance textiles, not unlike the exotic supercars that might grace the show floors of the Geneva Motor Show. Except these exceptional bib shorts go beyond existence as a concept, and are available to the discerning public.

The Volta's ergonomic multiple-paneled construction is actually the same as Capo's top-shelf Drago short, but a Swiss-sourced 40 gauge Lycra was instead selected for the main panels. This ensures a fit that actively supports critical muscles, without delving too deep into compressive territory. Capo has also engineered a new and super comfortable harness-style bib upper exclusively for both the Volta and its big brother, the Drago. These harness straps are composed of a lightweight eyelet mesh bonded to a brushed microfiber, which is then seam-taped and laser cut. The resulting straps are buttery smooth against your skin, and very low profile -- ideal for an abrasion-free and highly breathable fit beneath the Volta Jersey. At the heart of the Volta is Capo's top-shelf Anatomic Strada HD Carbon EIT Insert. In addition to the pad's multi-density anatomic construction, you also get two additional high-density perineal inserts to give more precise support on longer rides. Again, antimicrobial carbon fiber threads are also woven throughout, helping keep the chamois dry and funk-free. For many of us, this can mean the difference between nursing a painful saddle sore, and crossing the finish in first.

Capo finished the Volta Bib Shorts with a Schoeller coldblack treatment, designed to assist your skin with temperature regulation while protecting you from harmful UV rays. Even though both of the Volta colorway offerings feature a healthy amount of black, the coldblack treatment ensures that even under the hottest afternoon sun, the fabric resists heat buildup, and should remain cool to the touch. The laser-cut leg bands on the Volta are infused with a unique silicone treatment to more effectively keep the hem in place while you ride, and also to resist the ravages of your washing machine. Due to the shorts' compressive fit and tacky nature of the silicone, Capo recommends (and we completely agree) rolling the hem over while putting the shorts on, then rolling back on to your skin once you have the bib comfortably situated. The Capo Volta Bib Shorts are available in Black/green or Black/red, and in sizes Small through XX-Large.

  • Multi-density Strada Anatomic Carbon EIT insert offers incredible support and superior in-saddle comfort for the life of the short
  • Schoeller ColdBlack finish prevents heat build-up, keeping you cool even on the hottest afternoons
  • From start to finish, the Volta kit is designed and produced entirely in Switzerland exclusively for Capo

not good

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Thankfully I didn't pay full price for these. I have worn them twice and both times was chafed in the undercarriage after only 10 or so miles of riding as the rides progressed so did the discomfort. For a "high end" bib these are far less comfortable than many of the lower end capo bibs. As a reference I use Capo: gs13, padrone, nico, modena, persuit and Castelli: body paint, free aero bibs and the Volta bibs are by far the most uncomfortable I have ever worn. Also as a reference I do a lot of 100+ mile rides without any problems from the other bibs I use.

No brainer at 50% off.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Me: 6ft2, 162lbs, 30in waist
I need a large in Capo shorts. The fit is somewhat compressive in the thigh area but a little too loose around the waist. The chamois is truly one of the best and the shoulder strap distributes the pressure evenly although the top of the harness does not lay flat.
All in all, I am a bit disappointed with the fit. For me, the GS-13 is better and cheaper.

Nice form & fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

5' 9" 155lbs and M is great even for my big caboose. A touch long on the legs but very comfortable. Got them 40% off regular so I would say at that price they are worth it. As for the leg grippers, not a problem because I shave my legs.

Can't wait to try them on a 3-4 hr ride.

Ok, but not worth the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these bibs, and used them probably 10 times or so, and the shoulder straps fell apart. Overall they were ok. The chamois is quite a bit narrower than my other Capo bibs, creating unwanted pressure. The seams are not very smooth either, and the leg grippers pull on your skin and any hair you may have. Overall I wouldn't say these are worth the price.

Not impressed

Purchased these on sale in hopes of a bib short to wear on century/all day rides. I was thoroughly impressed with the fabric, straps, and fit of the bib shorts, but the chamois was a MAJOR dissapointment. Yes, the chamois is one of the more dense chamois I've seen on the market, but the size/area of the pad is small. Why they did this, I don't know? The coverage of the chamois is smaller than I prefer as well. I prefer a chamois that extends down the inside of my thighs a bit to prevent chaffing, but the chamois on these would create chaffing on my inner thighs, based on chamois I've tried on other models.

These also have thin leg grippers bonded to the inside of the legs. I found they do their job of holding the legs in place, but tend to stick to your legs. Think of them as a piece of double sided tap. I found this to be annoying, uncomfortable, and causes an area of excessive sweating (IE does not breath well).

For the price of these bibs, I thought they would knock my socks off and be amazing, but I was quite dissapointed. I think if you ordered a size small or medium, the size of the chamois would be fine. But for the XL size I ordered, the pad looked quite tiny. I also own the Padrone bib short and prefer the chamois on this model (although the material and bib straps of the Volta are IMO nicer thanthe Padrone). If Capo put the Padrone chamois in the Volta, I would have kept the Volta bibs, but I opted to return them as they are not going to work out for me.
