There's no life without a brain.

The engineering team at Campagnolo knew their original electronic drivetrain power unit was exceptionally efficient, but they felt that the design could be improved in terms of both aerodynamics and versatility. Their research resulted in the new EPS V2 Power Unit, which features a slimmed down, cylindrical design that provides several advantages over the first generation model. The biggest news is that the new power unit enables internal mounting — in the seat tube, down tube, or top tube — providing the obvious aerodynamic benefits but also even greater protection from the elements and impact. Those who choose to mount the unit externally will encounter less wind resistance due to the new profile.

Other than the new shape and lower weight (a claimed 130g compared to the original's 170g), the Power Unit is relatively unchanged. Digital Tech Intelligence (DTI) remains the brains of the entire Electronic Power Shift (EPS) system, and performs the most important operations in blisteringly fast time. For movement operations, DTI is in constant communication with the EPS V2 Interface Unit, receiving digital signals from the EPS Shift Levers, processing them through unique algorithms, and translating that information into the movements for the front and rear derailleurs. Concurrently, DTI is checking and maintaining onboard diagnostics, managing and checking the charge status of the battery pack, and controlling all derailleur automatic correction functions. DTI is the fail-safe against all system anomalies in EPS, signaling warnings through an acoustical buzzer on the undercarriage of the Power Unit and transmitting a signal to the EPS Interface, which communicates the information to you through a detailed RGB-variant color coding system. It also relays a message upon resolution of any system anomaly.

As mentioned, the EPS Power Unit also houses the Battery Pack that powers the Digital Tech Intelligence. The 3-cell (12-volt) lithium ion Battery Pack holds a charge longer than any electronic shifting system battery in production. In Standby Mode the Battery Pack can retain a charge for six months. In use, the charge varies by type of usage. At opposite ends of the spectrum, a 310 mile-per-month rider can expect around 964 miles per full charge, whereas a 1242 mile-per-month monster can expect roughly 1260 miles per full charge. Just as the DTI acts as a fail-safe for system anomalies, the Battery Pack has its own failure-prevention system to protect EPS and the battery. Operating at full charge from 11.1 nominal volts to 12.6 maximum volts, the system takes precaution at nine volts and turns itself off. Campagnolo exercised further precaution by installing a special circuit called PCM within the Battery Pack that turns off all charge when the Battery Pack reaches 7.2 volts.

Similar to the original power unit, the V2 features a cover designed to protect the brains of its electronic shifting system. The "black box" of componentry, it is an ultrasonically welded housing unit made of a self-extinguishing fireproof thermoplastic called UL94 V0. Campagnolo added special dampening to the case to minimize terrain vibration, and took the additional step of incorporating an anti-vibration dampening plug on the rear of the EPS Power Unit. The EPS Power Unit is also IP67 compliant, a rigid international standard for electronics that requires protection of electronic components from water and dust alike. To give you an idea of how stringent this test is, every Campagnolo EPS component had to operate perfectly while submerged under water for 30 minutes.

The Campagnolo EPS V2 Power Unit is available in one color and one size. Please note: The second generation Power Unit will mount internally with many, but not all, current frames. Check with the frame manufacturer to ensure internal mounting compatibility. Also note that Campagnolo's DTI V2 Interface Unit and V2 Battery Charger are required for the new EPS V2 Power Unit.
