When it came time for Borealis to build the Yampa, it was obvious that it needed a fork to match, which is how the FF1 Fat Bike Fork was born. Like the frame it was designed to pair with, it’s a carbon fiber wonder, and the first of its kind in the world of super-fat tires. And despite clearance for five-inch tires, it remains the lightest production fat fork on the market, which is especially useful if you’re trying to build up a race-weight fatty.
Sitting atop the FF1, you’ll notice the tapered steerer tube. It’s a standard that’s been widely adopted by the rest of the industry for its vastly improved stiffness over traditional straight steerer tubes. This is essential, since the beefy tops of the fork legs are capable of imparting immense force on the steerer. It’s a trait that’s amplified by the use of a 135x12mm thru axle, which yields not only stiffness, but superior front-wheel retention.
The carbon fiber construction matches seamlessly with the Yampa frame, although it makes an equally compelling mate to any tapered fat frame that’s built around a rigid fork. The legs are shaped to provide ample fore-aft stiffness, particularly under hard braking. But the natural vibration damping characteristics of carbon fiber lend the FF1 a smooth ride. And at 575g, it’s quite light, which helps to keep the weight of your new build from ballooning to match the tire size.
The Borealis FF1 Fork is available in one size, and in the color Carbon.
