Rightfully or not, fat bikes have garnered a reputation as the slow, plodding adventurer of the bicycle world, but Borealis blows that old stereotype out of the snow with the 2016 Crestone XX1/Bluto Complete Fat Bike. Pairing a stiff carbon fiber frame, plush fat tires, a Rochshox Bluto suspension fork, and SRAM's top-end XX1 groupset, this bike is a relatively lightweight and versatile steed chomping at the bit to take on any snowy trail adventure. Tell your other bikes they'll be getting a lot of rest this winter, layer up, and head out into the wilderness.
Borealis built the Crestone frame by pairing cutting-edge carbon fiber construction methods to finely tune the ride quality, resulting in a light, strong frame that will hold up to heavy use. That’s particularly important since the addition of the 100mm travel Bluto invites even more aggressive riding over crunchy terrain. Compared to the Echo, the Crestone clocks in at a claimed 150g lighter and boasts a shorter top tube and stack height and a slightly steeper head tube angle. Those geometry changes result in tighter steering, making this bike one of the more nimble fat bikes available.
The Crestone clears massive 4.8in tires on 80mm rims that provide a solid platform to roll while remaining sprightly compared to the extra-fat 100mm rims found on the Echo and Yampa. To achieve that degree of clearance, Borealis has relied on another industry first; namely, a 197mm rear hub, which is held firmly in place by a Maxle quick-release thru-axle. That oversized axle makes for a surprisingly stiff rear end and perfect drivetrain alignment with the 100mm threaded bottom bracket shell.
