Sure, you want a lightweight bike. Who doesn't? But, if the frame design compromises handling and for the sake of a few grams, is it worth it? Chris Boardman, British cyclist, three-time hour record holder, Tour prologue winner and gold medalist at the '92 games, was nicknamed "The Professor" for his obsession with aerodynamics. But, as a professional rider in the Tour, he also knows a thing or two about the importance of weight, especially when it comes to climbing. To this end Boardman Bikes engineered and developed the SLS frame. Similar in construction to the SLR, its geometry is suited to endurance and race events and performs especially well on the toughest climbs out there.

The SLS frame is high modulus carbon fiber monocoque construction. The definition of the monocoque process is hidden within the name -- 'mono' being Latin for 'one,' and 'coque' being French for 'shell.' So, as logic would have it, monocoque carbon fiber is formed as one piece in a single mold. This process allows virtually any tubing shape to be created. To develop a frame profile that maximizes strength, stiffness, and weight, the SLS was designed using Finite Element Anaylsis. FEA is a process by where specific loads applied by the rider to the frame are simulated but with far greater force. This helps to identify how the stresses and loads are distributed across each component. Using this information, material is placed where it is needed and removed where it isn't. For example, the down tube has been shaped to specifically address strength, stiffness, and weight.

The one-piece monocoque design incorporates a one-piece carbon PF30 bottom bracket and optimized, oversized chainstays. This design transfers power from the crankset through to the rear drivetrain and wheel so that none of your watts are wasted. Additionally, the profile of the seat stays increases shock absorption and reduces weight of the frame. The complete frame and fork weigh in at approximately 850 grams.

The SLS Endurance geometry features stability, predictable handling, and comfort for all disciplines from criterium racing to endurance events. The full carbon fork was designed with a blade-like profile for steering precision as well as to optimize airflow -- increasing aerodynamics. Finally, the frame is compatible with both mechanical and electronic internal cabling.

Boardman Bike's SLS 9.8 Road Bike Frame is available in six sizes from XX-Small to XX-Large and in the color Matte carbon/yellow.

  • Monocoque frame construction
  • Carbon fork
  • PF30 bottom bracket
  • Mechanical- and electronic-groupset compatible

The frame is worth twice as much!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Competitive built my SLS for me with DA DI2 and 3T. I run a custom set of 46 clinchers and I must say the bike has far exceeded every one of my expectations. It is exceptionally light, considering the frame has somewhat relaxed geometry. But don't be fooled, it is really not a "comfort bike" but instead a frame that can be easily raced while at the same time the geometry providing ample comfort for extended rides. The frame is stiff but not "unforgiving" stiff. I compared to the stiffness of a Tarmac and found the Boardman to be just a bit stiffer. I can recommend this frame without any hesitation and when I say it easily compares to frames costing 2x more, it is actually a true statement and not just a bunch of prejudiced B.S. I have a 2014 model and have just shy of 8k miles on it so I've had plenty of time riding it to form an opinion.

Great frame for the Price!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It has a very confortable but racy geometry. I´m an 40 year old experienced rider and i was looking for a good but not expensive frame and this Boardman has it all. Nice rigidity, great geometry, good Price and very nice handling overall. The color scheme is not my favourite but not too bad. If you are looking for a very good value for money frame this is it. email me for questions

Great frame for the Price!!

One of the best deals out there

I've been so impressed with Boardman bikes I just bought one for myself. I've been looking to upgrade for about a year and been shopping and demo'ing everything I can get my hands on. The Boardman's, especially this Elite SLS 9.8, fight way above their weight, competing with frames that cost twice as much. The SLS is light, stiff and smooth. Its a performance bike that just happens to have a nice endurance geometry for those who aren't as flexible as the pros at Le Tour.

If you want an exceptionally made frame with endurance geometry and don't want to spend the kid's college fund, this is your bike.

Hit me up with any questions!

Ben working on getting a nice bike that can do it all (climb, sprint, long distance). Been working on configuring a Ridley Fenix as the alternative to the more compliant Noah the Noah RS. Problem is my size is not available. Would like to look at the Boardman. Any suggestions? Right around 5'8". 30.5 inseam, currently ride a Neuvation FC 500 small 51 CM. with 520 eTT, 100 mm stem, 52 seat tube and 39.0 reach.

Jorge, we'd probably be looking at an XS in the SLS. Give me a shout and we can go over the details. 888-276-7130 ex 4647. Thanks!

Hello Ben, I have the Boardman SLS 9.8 BIKE. Do you know if a 28mm tire will fit the frame?

Najib, according to Boardman, yes, the SLS will accept a 28mm tire. Let me know if you need anything else.

Want to run DI2?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Give us a call to set up the build. This frame requires the Internal SM-BRT2 battery and the needed shims come with the battery. Update: PIN0138 is also needed because of the larger seatpost diameter.

Of course, it can also be set up with mechanical shifting.

Hi Adam,

Do you have any actual weights on this frame? Curious to know what the MD frame weighs as I'm seriously considering it. Thanks.

Brandon, we have actual weights listed at 850 grams for the frame only. The ride is incredible and the geometry of the SLS make it a perfect endurance oriented performance bike. Hit me up with any specific questions about the bike.
