Steeped in a history replete with gold medals, world records, and blazingly fast times on the track, Boardman Bikes knows speed and aerodynamics. The 2016 AiR 9.0 Ultegra Complete Road Bike takes this legacy to the next level with the latest iteration of Boardman's aerodynamic AiR frame and a Shimano Ultegra drivetrain.
Made from light, stiff, high-modulus carbon fiber, the AiR features carefully shaped tubes designed to slice through the air at yaw angles found in the real world, which means it reduces wind resistance in crosswinds and headwinds when you're out on the road. The inner faces of the fork blades and seatstays are flattened for claims of better airflow mechanics between the frame and wheel that Boardman designed specifically to maximize the aerodynamics of deep dish wheel systems. For additional aerodynamic benefits, Boardman places the rear brakes under the chainstays, out of the wind, and tucks the front brake neatly into an integrated home within the fork crown. While we like this setup's clean frame lines, its main purpose is to reduce drag compared to standard brake mounting.
A one-piece PressFit 30 bottom bracket shell sits in the middle of the frame, offering an extra helping of stiffness to solidly transfer every watt you put into the pedals into the drivetrain without any power-sucking lateral movement. The chainstays feature an oversized box section with a steep taper to the dropout for additional strength and optimal power transfer. As a final touch, Boardman builds the AiR with internal cable routing compatible with both mechanical and Di2 systems for a pinch more aerodynamic advantage and crisp, uninterrupted lines.
The 2016 AiR 9.0 Ultegra Complete Road Bike utilizes Boardman's four-position seatpost with adjustability to accommodate riding positions ranging from 73 to 75 degrees. This range of customizability allows the AiR to effortlessly cross between road, time trial, and triathlon positioning to tackle multiple disciplines.
