Describing the BMC Time Machine TM01 in the simplest terms is, well, simple -- it's a frame that makes you faster. Essentially, BMC has created a time trial frame that revolutionizes aerodynamics, carbon rigidity, and rider positioning. Already seeing great success with Cadel's victory in the 2011 Tour, the TM01 is proving that innovation works hand-in-hand with race-day results. So, whether you're looking to shave seconds on your next time trial, or slay the upcoming triathlon season, the Time Machine TM01 is the frame that'll deliver the time that you need.
BMC has broken down the art of frame design to a science. In fact, the philosophy of the TM01 is able to be summed up in a formula, Vmax = p2p x suBA. If that doesn't make sense, perhaps this will: 'Maximum Velocity = Position to Perform x Aerodynamics of the Rider and Bike.' In layman's terms, it means 'all of the cool stuff BMC did to this bike makes you go really fast.'
The first variable, Position to Perform, represents the key features new to the TM01 design. To maximize efficiency, BMC examined the impact of aerodynamic body positioning on the reduction of drag coefficient, and then accounted for rider comfort for prolonged periods of time in this position. The result is BMC's revolutionary, and exclusive, 21_21 Offset that allows four basic saddle positions at +21, +7, -7, and -21mm, fore and aft, on the integrated seatpost. While still UCI-compliant, consider this a short cut around strict regulations on extreme saddle positioning. The other touch point that BMC put under the microscope was the handlebars. BMC threw out the playbook to create the Tri Angle Concept. This invention allows the integrated stem to be adjusted in more than 30 positions with negative and positive degrees of angle. The system was achieved by using a variable arrangement of triangular forms and spacers that you're able to add or remove in order to adjust your position throughout the season. The P2P philosophy is at the heart of the TM01. Simply put, the more the body is able to be adjusted, and the more that drag is able to be reduced, the more comfort that the TM01 will be able to produce during long time trials.
Step two for BMC was mitigating drag on the TM01 frame itself. Back to the formula; suBA suggests that frame aerodynamics are able to be maximized by minimizing the front area of the frame through four core features exclusive to the TM01. The first new feature is the Tear Drop 3:1 frame design. This is in reference to the extreme teardrop shape of the frame that still complies with UCI's maximum length-to-width ratio of 3:1. TM01's truncated profile is incorporated into this shape. This profile accounts for the straight break-away edge of the seatstays that reduces airflow turbulence. The truncated profile also reduces raw material requirements to lower frame weight, while the break-away edge increases rigidity to the rear triangle of the frame.
To further reduce turbulence, BMC went to extreme lengths to integrate system components into the TM01. The TM01 has complete integration for electronic components, and front and rear brake calipers, to streamline its form and improve aerodynamics. Perhaps the most advanced feature of the suBA frame design is the incorporation of Tripwire. This minute frame molding detail is borrowed from aeronautical technology, and creates a slight turbulence directly above the frame surface. This creates an artificial boundary that forces the laminar boundary layer towards the forward part of the frame to become turbulent. This process enables airflow to remain attached over more of the frame, and provide a lower level of integrated drag.
BMC sought nothing short of perfection in the creation of the Time Machine TM01, and they hit mark. Every aspect of the TM01 is revolutionary, from the stealth aesthetic to the reduction of drag. BMC has changed the face of fast. The 2013 BMC Time Machine TM01 Frameset is compatible with BB30 bottom brackets and all 11-speed group sets. Its now available in the color Team Red and in the sizes Small, Medium/long, Medium/short, and Large.
