Description

Till crappy conditions dwindle, ride indoors.

The Race of the Falling Leaves traditionally signals the end of the season. And as we watch the leaves fall around us, we're reminded that it won't be long before we'll look to a stationary trainer to help us stay in shape for next season. The Blackburn Tech Mag 6 Trainer is a perfect tool for indoor training because of its six-position adjustable magnetic resistance.

For this trainer, Blackburn uses magnets to provide you with the resistance. Easy days are no problem; simply ratchet the resistance down to level 1 and spin along in an easy gear. Looking for more workout than that? Click up to level 6 and torture yourself in a high gear. The included handlebar-mounted remote lever makes it convenient to switch from one resistance level to the next, even as you ride.

The Tech Mag 6 Trainer has a few details that really stand out for us. The swing-out legs are truly adjustable, like overbuilt versions of the leg adjusters on your nice camera tripod. So even if you set it up on an uneven sidewalk at the local criterium, you can level the trainer and your bike in a matter of seconds. The interface with the rear skewer is also improved over other trainers. Blackburn machines a taper on their cones so they'll fit more easily into cavity-style dropouts, ensuring a solid purchase on the ends of the skewer assembly.

The Blackburn Tech Mag 6 Trainer is made of tubular steel, and that's the key difference between it and the lighter Tech Mag Race Trainer. The steel frame here is plenty stiff, and it's super strong to last for season after season of abuse. Like their other models, it uses the FastCrank system for quick in and out with the bike. It works for road and mountain bikes.

Excellent Trainer

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I live in Houston, and since we get sun most days of the year, my need for a trainer was rather low...however if I had to train indoors (rain, lazy) I wanted to make sure it had a good QPR. Tech Mag 6 is everything I hoped it would be. Very easy to assemble...just a few nuts and bolts, maybe 20 minutes and I was on the bike. Easy to connect to the bike (2010 Roubaix Comp) and incredibly stable. Even while standing up and grinding there was very little movement in the trainer. The remote was great to have as well...mimics hills (5-6), harder work (3-4) , or cruising and sprinting as well (1-2). I threw a yoga mat underneath to catch all the sweat, and you'll certainly sweat more than on a regular ride with no wind.

Since I haven't used many trainers, I can't compare the noise level to others, but I can tell you it wasn't loud, and I could easily watch TV without turning it up more than I usually do. It even folds up to put away under a bed or some out of the way place. This'll be a great thing to have to keep the training up...may even bring it out to some rides to warm up before we kick.

Great first Trainer

This is my first trainer and it works great. All the listed features is what sold me on this product. I managed to set it up even though there was no instruction manual with it. Is that normal or does everyone have to figure out how to assemble it with the pictures on the box? Besides that, it was a great deal.
