BKOOL Wireless ANT+ Trainer $649.99
Gather your friends.
Are you are a group ride addict? On every donut ride, coffee ride and training ride to be found in your town? If so, when the frost and drifts of winter snow set in, you're bound to feel let down and isolated —relegated to the basement to spin away the hours on the trainer. BKOOL is a new, internet-based platform aimed at providing complete training support for riders. A combination training program and social media rolled into one package, the BKOOL Trainer will have you up and connected to virtual group rides the world over, before you even pull on one winter glove.
The BKOOL trainer is a simple, foldable trainer that is fully assembled. All you need to do is place the rear axle in the trainer, tighten the adjustable quick-release wheel lock and you're ready to ride. The bike is gravity swing mounted for compliance and predictable grip against the roller. This also means you won't spend time readjusting the roller each time you place your bike on the trainer. It accommodates any wheel size, though a slick road or trainer tire is recommended. The roller is machined aluminum for a smooth ride.
Metrics are probably the most sought after data for indoor training. The trainer features a power plug, so you'll need to set up near an outlet. That said, it connects wirelessly to your laptop via the supplied USB ANT+ dongle. It is also compatible with ANT+ heart rate monitors so that all your metrics are visible during your ride. How does the BKOOL connect you to riders around the world? Well, BKOOLruns on its proprietary BSim software. The BSim software is free to download and runs on your PC to display and record your training sessions. More importantly, it interfaces with the trainer to alter resistance according to the route or profile that you've pre-selected — you don't need to turn knobs or push buttons while trying to keep your wattage output within your training parameters. The BKOOL trainer provides variable resistance to replicate inclines of up to 20 per cent and power output up to 1200watts.
Using the BSim software, you can share your routes with friends, compete with other BKOOLusers and even stream more than 80 cycling videos. More impressive is that BKOOL is not limited to indoor training sessions. In fact, using the free app, downloadable through the App Store or Google Play, you can use your smartphone to record outdoor ride, speed, distance, altitude, and maps to your BKOOL rider profile. BKOOLis the hub of the system and it stores all of your data and sessions so they are accessible by you anywhere in the world. You are also able to easily create indoor ride profiles based off of your outdoor rides so you'll be ready for those city limit sprints once the donut rides start up in the spring.
The BKOOL system comes with the ready to ride trainer, a rear wheel skewer, a front block and the ANT+ dongle. The BSim smartphone apps are free as is a basic BKOOL account. There is a small subscription fee to upgrade your online profile to premium.

riding the bkool
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
it has been a really rough winter in the northeast.
much colder than usual and roads and woods have been both icy and dangerous.
i have been riding the bkool system for 2 months now to break the winter blues.
it is a great system. fun to use and simple to set up.
the software is excellent... there is a ton of information on there and it seems like every time i find another layer of information and interest.
i joined a league... the league monthly sends out a " stage race" that you can do... gives you a result if you want to guage yr fitness vs other riders..
you can upload your own routes to the system. this will allow other riders to ride your routes- wherever they may be. it also allows you ( if yr so inclined ) to train on your race course.. there is google earth video available for any route.
its simple to use as a real training tool. there is a threshold test on there that will show your training zones and adapt to your personal fitness level.. wattage is shown as well as cadence and it will pick up any ant+ hr monitor if you use that.
i have enjoyed using it and expect to use it even when the weather breaks for a session or 2 a week. excellent product.

It looks like the electric plug is European, does it come with an adapter for the USA?
Hey Doug, this comes with a US plug. The photo is direct from BKOOL. We should have our own photo updated on the site soon.

first hand experience
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
1st impression: Wow factor upon opening the box ? trainer looks awesome. The matte white finish is easy to clean. The trainer can fit most any wheel diameter. My riding experience on a steep incline with some declining sections felt like the resistance matched exactly to the ride. It really feels like you?re cresting the hill or hitting the bottom of the hill as it appears on the screen.
I really like how simple and easy the simulator (called BSim) is to use. The software communicates with the trainer via the ANT+ Dongle and it?s worth noting the signal can be blocked if you are standing in front of the computer.
I signed up for the premium account ($12/month, no contract) which allows access to 300+ HD videos filmed by BKOOL. HD! The routes/videos can be tailored to fit a variety of training sessions you configure on BKOOL?s website, and then download the session to BSim and start riding.
The feature I?m most impressed with is the community/social aspect. You can join/create groups of riders online; interact with riders like social media, share sessions/rides, and challenge riders. Events can also be created within specific groups and you can simulate a stage race with a general classification.
Your training history can be saved on the site, and in addition to BKOOL?s sessions you can create custom sessions from your own training history. Ultimately there is a ton you can do with their site and software. There is an App out there now, but it?s pretty simple; for example the app will record your training just like strava does and then upload it to your BKOOL account.
A new software version will be available later in the year. This new software (and App) will allow you to run BSim from your smartphone and tablet. In the works is video editing software so you can record your own video, and paired with GPS data you can train on the same routes. The Garmin Virb would be a recommended camera to pair with this software.
