Well billed.

On days when the lift is carrying you to the top and the bike is carrying you down, a full-face helmet's extra weight and stifling body is a small price to pay for the extra protection. But when you're the engine on the uphills, too, then you'll want something a bit lighter, a bit more ventilated, a bit more like Bell's Volt XC Helmet.

The Volt XC is built on the same platform as Bell's most versatile road cycling helmet, so it's the lightest, most-cooling helmet in Bell's off-road line. The only difference between the XC and the road-specific RL is the former's inclusion of a Variable Position Visor (VPV). The VPV's bill lives up to its billing with up to 15 degrees of adjustability so you can match the angle to your geometry and positioning. With a paltry weight penalty of around 30 grams, the added protection is well worth it.

The helmet's low weight and trail-worthy durability stem from Bell's In-Mold construction method. In-Mold consists of melding the polycarbonate, outer shell with the EPS foam of the helmet's body in order to increase impact absorption and structural integrity. The technology appears in various iterations across the industry because it works, pure and simple, and when it comes to safety, such broad consensus is reassuring.

The lightweight Kit webbing used for the Volt's straps resists absorbing sweat, so it stays cleaner and doesn't gain weight during the course of a long, hot day in the mountains. The StreamJet ventilation system also helps manage sweat with 22 vents that feed refreshing air into a series of internal channels and out through rear exhaust ports.

The Volt RL also enjoys the inimitable fit of Bell's Twin Axis Gear (TAG) fit system. TAG uses a standard rear dial to adjust the circumference of the helmet's fit, and it also moves up and down in order to accommodate your occipital lobe. The frame's arms are rubberized for comfort and positioned a little higher than usual, which makes for an easier time getting your glasses on without dismounting as you roll over the summit of a climb to start the descent.
