Mountain wings.

While the Premium 24T Tune Hub Tubular Wheelset isn't the lightest in AX-Lightness's climbing wheel range, their absurdly low weight (a claimed 865 grams for the set) puts them in a league that still outclasses most manufacturers' lightest climbers. The rims' combined 230 grams of low rotational mass mean the Premium 24Ts climb even more efficiently than the wheels that most of the peloton's mountain angels are using. If you want to fly, these are your wings.

There are two peculiarities that set the Premium 24Ts apart from a usual climb-specific wheelset. The first is the 21.5 millimeter rim, which is wider than most super-skinny climbers. The extra millimeter of width allows for a more comfortable ride that corners better and produces less rolling resistance. The second is that AX-Lightness opts for a weave instead of the ubiquitous unidirectional fiber. While unidirectional fibers are preferable in situations where a component is bearing a static load, the dynamic load bearing properties of a fabric recommend it for a wheel, which rotates through various angles of load.

The Premium 24Ts also benefit from much of the line-topping Ultra 24Ts' tech, including AX-Lightness's Seamless Brake Surface (SBS). SBS uses high-pressure autoclaves to combine the wheels' layers with gas, eliminating any imperfections down to the smallest edge for a one-piece brake surface that's both seamless and virtually free of imperfections. It may look like a typical, mass-production rim, but the Premium's SRT24 rim is nearly perfect on a microscopic scale after it's cured, so there's no shuddering while braking during descents. After curing, the wheels are tempered, which realigns the resin crystals to drastically increase the braking temperatures that they can withstand before the carbon softens and deforms.

The wheels' reliability is also boosted by Spoke Reinforcement Technology, which creates the spoke holes during the manufacturing process itself. There is no post-production drilling once the rims come out of the autoclave, so there's no additional structural weakness. As a result, the Premium 24Ts can bear five tons of nipple resistance, which AX-Lightness takes advantage of by tensioning the spokes to 1300 N.

The hubs are also German affairs, straight out of the Black Forest: Tune's Mig45 front and Mag150 rear. The flanges are reduced and wrapped in carbon, which makes for a lighter package. Except for on the rear drive side, the flanges aren't oversized, but the carbon reinforcement serves to stiffen them up considerably.

Please note that AX-Lightness recommends a rider weight limit of 220 lbs. (100kg).
