Avid Shorty 4 Cyclocross Brakes $0.00
A chip off the old brake.
The Avid Shorty 6's little brother, the Avid Shorty 6 Cyclocross Brake is built to work with any road lever. There are a few subtle differences between the two. The first is that the 4's cantilever arm is forged aluminum, where the 6 is machined. The second is that the 4 gets a less expensive painted finish than the 6. The last is that the 4 comes with one-piece pads, where the 6 comes with Avid's standard road pads, which allow you to change pad surfaces without having to realign the cantilevers. On the other hand, the two share strength, weight, and braking power.
Avid's Shorty 4 Cyclocross Brakes offer easy canti- arm adjustability with a stiff spring and limit screws on each side. The standard 70mm pads will give you tons of stopping power. They come as separate sets for front and rear. You'll have to order one set for each wheel to outfit your bike.

Great Price, but not for extreme use
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Bought these looking to replace my cheap, V-brakes. Note to self...cheap cantis are not necessarily an upgrade for cheap V-brakes.
Had them installed by my mechanic. The straddle wire broke immediately and had to be replaced. But for the chinz-y staddle wire, the cantis themselves work as advertised. Good smooth stopping power. I cannot get to lock up the wheels though. They are aesthetically bulky, but I can live with that.
Best Bang for le Buck

Although Disc brakes on cross bikes seem to be the way things are headed, a good pair of canti's will definitely still slow your go. These brakes were very easy to setup, and offer a good deal of adjustment in spring tension and centering. The only consideration is that the provided brake pads are specific to aluminum rims. At this pricepoint, that is likely not an issue, but if you do need replaceable brake pads, go with something like the avid shorty 6 which come ready to accept your carbon pads.
