I have had a lot of experience with Avid's Elixir line, from XX to the Elixir 1. These have the best blend of power and modulation, weight, and reliability. Put one solid bleed on these guys and call it a season. Can't say that for others in the lineup. I agree with Cameron below, organic pads give the best feel, but be prepared to replace pads every month if you are riding a lot of big descents.

Initially I had issues with the metallic brake pads. When I switched to the organic pads the whole feel changed. They modulate nicely and have good power. I don't care for the placement of the reach adjuster. It is useless and in the way. You don't see it on many of Avid's other brakes. I think they realized that the reach adjuster placement was a poor design. Other than that, Avid made a pretty good brake. I haven't ridden Shimano XT or XTR so I can't compare them to those.
