A KOM 300 million years in the making.

From their nascent, initial upthrust of Precambrian metamorphic rock during the Upper Carboniferous subperiod (circa 300 Ma) to our weekend epics tracing the opening salvo of the queen stage of Utah's home race from Salt Lake City to Park City, the Rocky Mountains — whether Ancestral or post-Laramide orogeny — have been present for nigh-on all the epochal events in natural history. While linking a friendly mountainous noodle with a series of apocalyptically slow-motion tectonic processes culminating in the Farallon plate subduction and some pretty intense Pleistocene glaciation may seem a bridge too far to some readers, the imaginative Aussies at Attaquer see only possibility, which is why they produced the Rockies Eagle Kit. The Rockies Eagle Kit celebrates the geographical aftermath of some 300 million years of big rocks banging into each other in order to produce the mountainous playgrounds that we Lycra mountaineers revel in today — with an eagle added in for good measure.

Though the jersey's mountains (and bird of prey) hail from North America and the design bridging geologic time is Australian, the materials used are purely old-world Italian. The aggressive, race-fit cut and gentle compression make for the ideal companion on grueling passes and unforgiving granite moonscapes, even if you're feeling more like a sprinter in the autobus than an angel of the mountains flying with the jersey's triumphal eagle.

The kit is also dimpled throughout and has extended sleeves and legs for an aerodynamic edge on flats and descents. Of course, both of those details may be small consolation when you're caught out between the man with the hammer and a tectonostratigraphic terrane that was thrust up when its parent plate subducted. The arm and laser-cut leg bands aren't subject to those rules of tectonics, though, as they feature thin, gripping bands to stay in place and maintain coverage without constriction. They also help to ensure a wide breadth of coverage to take full advantage of the material's UVP of 50.

For all the material's impressive properties, a kit's chamois is its make-or-break point. The chamois is also Italian, and it features a triple density design geography that's meant to draw pressure away from the perineal region. In other words, you'll get more support and substance at the sit bones than on the preceding softer tissues. The insert is also perforated to dissipate heat and moisture, and friction is virtually eliminated by the smooth Italian microfiber cover that stretches to move with you and babies your skin with a gentle touch at odds with the punishing terrain of a multi-peak day in the mountains.
