The Assos FI.Mille A.360 bib short was a mainstay of the Assos apparel line for nearly a decade. It was always known as their "Long Distance Short", and in the revamped version here known as the FI Mille S5, this essence remains the same.

Why "Long Distance"? It's for two key reasons: First off, the FI.Mille S5 provides more stretch and less compression than the FI.13 S5. This is due to both the fabric selection, the cutting lines of the fabric, and the number of total panels of fabric. While the added stretch and malleability of the fabric provides less muscle compression than the S5, it moves with a silken closeness to your body as you pedal. If you've ever ridden for 6 hours at a clip, you know little things matter a whole lot, and this is one of those comfort details you'll appreciate.

The other "Long Distance" characteristic of the FI.Mille S5 is its unique chamois. Like the FI.13 S5, the chamois is curved to perfectly fit your body, and it has a cut at the front of the chamois to reduce genital pressure. In addition it has the same softness and heat-ventilation dimples of the FI.13 chamois. What gives the FI.Mille S5 chamois its "Long Distance" designation is the fact that it's a bit bigger in surface area than the FI.13; it stretches less than the FI.13; and it has a stabilizer built into the chamois, causing it to move less during your pedal stroke.

The FI.Mille S5 makes strategic use of A430 fabric to wick sweat and elastic fabric to reduce genital pressure. And it's built with the same AEPD cut as the FI.13 S5 to feel like it "clicks" in place on your body when you're reaching for the bars. The added stretch of the FI.Mille gives it a perceptible level of comfort. Bigger riders -- and non super-skinny riders -- will appreciate how the FI.Mille S5 fabric stretches laterally on your body with greater ease than the FI.13 S5. If the FI.13 S5 feels right length-wise, but too tight width-wise, you'll experience something totally different with the FI.Mille S5.

The FI.Mille S5 is available 5 colors, in sizes Small-TIR. It comes with a small jar of Assos' legendary Chamois Cream as well as a small bottle of Active Wear Cleanser, plus a wash bag. Please Note: Assos now makes these bib shorts in a long and regular leg length. This is the traditional long version.

Will you restock these in size Large in Black color? Thanks,

This is how shorts are supposed to feel

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

For years I have been suffering in pain with a pair of Trek Criterium shorts, with only a 2 way chamois. I was hesitant to switch to a bib short and leery of the price. After seeing all the positive reviews I decided to give it a go. The chamois is absolutely perfect. Like the pamphlet says it form fits to your body as soon as you sit on the saddle. I've only taken them out of a few 20 mile rides thus far, which I would always notice perineum pain afterwards. Not with these shorts. The materials are high quality and while this garment requires extra special washing care, I suspect it will last a very long time if treated properly. My only real complaint is that I am on the shorter size of the Medium sized bib and as a result the legs are larger that my normal short size (small). As a result the leg grippers are looser than I'm used to. Aside from this the bibs fit perfect. 4.5 stars out of 5

At last comfort...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Long history riding and being skeptical of claims of best this or that and so called technological advancements in chamois, etc.

I've typically used Pearl, Capo, Hincapie, Giordana, and found that for minor differences only price made an impact. Pearl was the best in terms of value to comfort ratio. I decided to try Assos Mille and at first the difference was marginally better at start of ride. After 110 miles, the chamois remained comfortable whereas the others broke down under my weight at 3-4 hours in the saddle. This marginal improvement in comfort at the beginning was the critical difference at 4 hours into a 6+ hour ride gaining altitude all day long. The comfort remained consistent the entire ride. These shorts lived up to the hype.

From a skeptic, these are the best shorts I've ridden to date after 30+ years riding.

Size large fit perfectly at 6'3" and 195 lbs.

Caveat: I tested these shorts without using chamois creme to really push the limits of comfort.

Highly Recommend

I wear Castelli bibs in size L, is this...

I wear Castelli bibs in size L, is this FI Milles Assos bib sizing similar to Castelli bibs? FYI, I am 5' 9" and 165 lbs.

Best Answer

I'd go for a medium. Assos size chart is actually very accurate. The bib shorts are more designed for height, and from my experience, most people need one size larger in Castelli compared to Assos.

best bib i ever had !

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

im a RAPHA fan but this bibshort is far comfy. The padding is just enough especially if your doing century rides! i got this one on sale for $89 !!!

Where did you find them for $89.

here in CC on sale last dec 31,3013..color blue and it work well with my bike!

Need Large Thighs

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Well made, nice material, very good chamois but you need large thighs. The legs are a little large and the leg grips are not tight enough so the leg material tends to ride up toward your crotch. Guess my thighs are not large enough. I got the medium which fit great except for the legs. I'm 5'8" and 155#. Based on this I would not have ordered again.

Jesus' Bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are the best bibs for riding. The chamois is pure bliss. I would recommend it in a heartbeat. The legs are not as compressive as others that I have they are compressive enough to not be a problem on any level. The straps I great and the material is solid.

Best long-haul shorts money can buy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are expensive enough that I set them aside for especially long rides, and they are especially rewarding for that purpose. Although Assos says that these will not last especially long, I have never found any Assos product to be flimsy and still have Assos shorts that I got in 2007: you'll want to follow their directions for putting them on, washing, etc., for best results and real longevity. Watch it though--they wear out in the seat first, and I have seen Assos shorts out on the road with big patches of bare ass. Check the mirror every now and then!

The turquoise pad is controverisal, and I think it is marginally better than the old orange pad. It seems softer, but doesn't seem to be going "flat" or wearing any faster. If you prefer the orange pad, it is made by Cytech and can be found on Rapha and Search and State shorts, both are excellent alternatives. I prefer the Assos Mille shorts to both of those.

The shoulder straps are the best in the business, about 2.5" wide and very comfortable. The legs fit well, and while there have been complaints about the band fitting "loose," it tightens up well when you are actually on the bike.

The only thing I don't like about them is that there is a panel on the front made out of different material that points right at your junk and suggests a triangle of pubic hair. When your friends make fun of you (and believe me, they will), respond in a German accent that Americans are prude in these matters.

Comfortable Bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are great shorts for those long rides; very comfortable and fits really well. I currently own 3 pair; 1st pair Jun 2011; 2nd pair Feb 2012 and 3rd pair Mar 2013. The only problem that I have had with all these are the elastic at the bottom of the thigh. They lost their elasticity from use. The last pair I purchased in 2013 only took a few rides to loose the elasticity. It is usually confined to one thigh but one pair it was both. I still wear the shorts and was thinking about sewing the elastic.

Becoming addicted to these...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've bought a pair of these, and after using them for a week, ordered two more...

These are almost perfect bib shorts and will improve your comfort on the bike by 100%

Especially during winter with long session indoors, these make the difference between being able to get to the end of the session and climbing down in pain.

Must buy !!!

Won't wear anything else

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I currently own two pairs (3 if you count the FI.Mille_S5 knicker-version) - and won't wear anything else. After years of use/thousands of miles they are still going strong. Fit is so perfect and the chamois so comfortable you might actually look forward to wearing them. Seriously, words cannot describe how much better the chamois is than any other bike short. If you ride with a club/team, be prepared to ditch your team kit shorts (Note: when you do ditch the kit shorts, it is helpful to be prepared with excuses on why you are not wearing them)

Best Bib Shorts Ever

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have tried every other brand and style of high end bib short and these are the best by a long shot. I have 4 pairs and have owned them for 3-4 years each and have put a couple thousand miles on each with only minor wear visable. The chamios is huge and covers any areas that might be prone to friction burns with other brands. The fabric really compresses nicely and hasn't lost any compression over time. This is also the only bib short I've ever owned that hasn't had an issue with stitching after a lot of wear and washing. I really hope that the new S7 models are made with the same quality. The only real drawback is the price; I think they are more expensive than my first bike.

An outstanding pair of bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are super comfortable for long hours in the saddle. I've owned 2 pair for 3+ years & they've held up well after many miles & many washes. The only bibs I might replace them with would be the new s7's.
