Description

Your foot's second skin.

A fact of life for most cyclists is that their monthly mileage tends to track directly alongside the number of daylight hours in the day, which leads to the ironic fact that many of us have our biggest mileage months when the summer heat is at its worst. The checklist of details for keeping ourselves relatively comfortable in scorching conditions is straightforward: We stay hydrated by drinking a boatload of water, we slather on chamois cream to ward off saddle sores, we wrap our bars in the most forgiving tape to keep our hands from blistering. But one of the most vexing problems of warm weather riding is a byproduct of technology we like for most of the year: The super-stiff carbon soles on our shoes and small platform size of our lightweight pedals contribute to the not-uncommon summertime malady of hot spots on our feet.

We've battled hot spots in every way imaginable -- we've tried different insoles, different shoes, we've moved around our cleats and changed pedal systems altogether. While no single solution seems to be a permanent cure, change oftentimes seems to help quite a lot. Our friends at Assos, too, have offered a means of giving our feet TLC with the introduction of their skinweb summerSocks.

Along the bulk of your foot the weightless, breathable skinweb fabric allows air to circulate, keeping your feet as ventilated and cool as humanly possibly on stifling days. Around the toes, the heel, and the ankle, though, the material has a bit more heft to it -- it feels quite a lot like what you get in Assos' spring/fall socks. At the toes and heel it's obvious that the purpose behind the heavier fabric is to give the skinweb summerSocks added cushion and durability, and around the ankle its purpose is to keep the socks in place.

The skinweb represents real innovation in terms of keeping your feet comfy, and the contrasting color scheme is handsome, bold, and unlike anything you've seen from any other brand of sock. Available in two sizes, and in five colors -- Black, White, Yellow, Red, Blue.

Breathe!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Finally, cool comfort for the hot-footed typed! Super comfy, and super breathable. Socks stay in place; not really any compression or support (arch) like some others, but perfectly fine for a lightweight summer sock.

Note on fit (especially for ladies):

I normally wear a ladies U.S. size 7.5, and got a size '0', and a size '1' (since my size is right on the edge of both). While the '0' fits, it is close; the size '1' fits better...not too big at all...just a F.Y.I.

Recommended.
