When it comes to frigid air slamming into your face, everyone has a breaking point. We get there at 60kph when the temperature is –9° C or so. At that point, it feels as though we're riding directly into a howling sandstorm. Since the spirit is there but the epidermis is lacking, those moments call for the Assos faceMask.S7 for protection.

Yes, there are other face masks out on the market. But very few are specifically designed for riding. As such, the typical ones you'll find are too thick for helmets or don't allow for eye protection. Another problem with generic equipment is the length. For cycling, the front and back need to be specifically cut to ride on the drops without exposing your neck.

Assos went to work on solving these problems. First, the material is thin, with the denser RX fleece fabric for the front panel and the thinner, stretchier, channeled RXQ for the rear. The combination of the two helps with both warmth and fit. There are loops on the sides of the mask by the tops of your ears that act as anchors for the earpieces. Simply thread them into the loops, and they'll stay in place even without your ears to hold them. In front, the neck is elongated to cover your neck when hunkered down on the hooks. The opening for your face is designed to be flexible; it can be closed, to keep your nose and mouth covered, or pulled down for full access and a bit of ventilation.

The Assos faceMask.S7 comes in Black. Sizes are 0, I, and II.

Too much branding

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The logo on the forehead is plastic and about the size of an m&m. If it rests under your helmet in just the right place, no problem. Otherwise, it's exactly like having an m&m stuck to your forehead right where your helmet touches your forehead. This is considered torture in some countries.

If it's so cold that you'll get numb anyway, you'll get over it.
