The best in rain protection.

When Assos set out to build the ultimate rain jacket, its engineers didn't take the task lightly. They knew that if it was going to wear the revered Assos badge, it would have be light, packable, highly protective, and, most importantly, fit perfectly. The result of their efforts was the well-received original rS.sturmPrinz Jacket. This updated version has been tweaked to perfectly mate with the iJ.tiBuru for cold winter riding conditions.

Assos started with the idea that an effective rain jacket has to be waterproof and work for cyclists riding hard in the worst conditions. But most importantly, it must fit like an Assos top. The question was how to accomplish this. To start, the engineers created new fabrics — Triton V1 and Triton V2. Triton V1 is the tougher, heavier, more waterproof fabric, and it was used for the front panels. Triton V2 is lighter, more breathable and was used in back. The Swiss-made Triton fabric is a temperature-sensitive waterproof-breathable membrane. This means that when it's cold, the membrane is less breathable, which is good, as it will help hold in your body heat. When it's warm, the membrane is more breathable, and it will help vent sweat vapor.

On the sides of the rS.sturmPrinz EVO, the airVent system further helps vent sweat and keep your core temperature stable and comfortable. On the inside, you'll see that the seams are sealed, so no water is able get in where fabric panels join. There's also a vent parallel with the shoulder blades that helps vapor exit at this zone. The wrists and neck have adjustable seals so you can tighten them to keep out the cold and wet or loosen them to get a little additional venting. This way you're able to always have a customized fit to suit your preferences and conditions.

At the back of the jacket, you'll see a center pocket, sealed with a reflective zipper. On either side are pocket flaps that work both as vents and as access points to your jersey pockets underneath. And when the rain ends and the sun decides to pop out, the jacket is light enough to stow in a jersey pocket.

The Assos rS.sturmPrinz EVO Jacket - Men's is available in seven sizes from X-Small to TIR and in the colors Black Volkanga and Lolly Red. Please note that Assos' XLG equates to XX-Large, and TIR is the same as the XLG but slightly wider throughout.

Excellent 'racing fit' rain jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

My experience is quite different than the reviewer that gave this product a one-star review. I simply don't get why he disliked it so much.

SUMMARY: I'd say this is my favorite hard shell and well worth the price. The one-star review mentions that the zipper gets caught in the flap, and I have experienced this as well. It is a design flaw, and I'm subtracting one star because of it. Be careful when zipping/unzipping. The jacket shows no sign of wear yet -- I will update this review at the end of the season to report on durability.

I've used the jacket for roughly a month, and ridden in light to moderate rain for several hours on multiple occasions. I've also used the jacket daily as a wind-breaker (hard shell) as I tend to chill easily. I don't wear a backpack and wouldn't use this for commuting, because it is very tight and I prefer comfort over performance when commuting (I use a Showers Pass Refuge rain suit for low intensity rides in the rain).

I wear this jacket when exerting myself at or near training pace, and layer it over an Assos baselayer and either an Assos jersey or soft shell. I wear extra small in Assos tops, but I purchased the jacket in small to allow it to fit over the soft shell. The jacket is short in the front when standing, but fits perfectly when riding. If you sit upright when riding (i.e., straight or mustache handlebars), you should probably get a size up.

The Sturmprinz is not as waterproof as my Showers Pass Refuge jacket, but then it does breathe much better. It sheds water better than my Craft Bike Tech jacket, and has better breathability/temperature regulation. I have experienced no leakage along the seams and, while the zipper does get caught on the flap occasionally, it doesn't leak. I am damp when the ride ends, but it is uniform dampness due to sweating.

Temperature regulation is spectacular and if the zipper were a bit better, I would rate this five stars. I can hardly tell that I'm wearing it as far as overheating goes and I have yet to unzip during rides it once I've put it on. It packs reasonably well and fits into a jersey or jacket pocket. One really nice feature is that the pocket flaps line up perfectly with the pockets on Assos jerseys.

Highly recommended.

WAY OVERPRICED AND POOR QUALITY

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I've owned this jacket for almost a month and a half now. I ride daily and in all weather conditions. My requirements when purchasing this coat were light weight, waterproof, and good style. The best part of this coat is the style. As far as high end cycling jackets go this one is the slickest looking out there and without any big branding labels some of the other guys have that make me feel like I'm advertising my sponsors in a race. The second best part of this coat is how light and thin it is, yet somehow provides some warmth. Unfortunately, the pros end there. The first issue I had with this jacket was the sizing. I was on the upper edge of Assos' small size specification so I decided better too big than too small and got the medium. The medium is still a little tight and too short in the front, but the sleeves are the perfect length at least. The next issue I had was the bright red flap on the inside of the front zipper. This piece of material tapers from about 2 inches at the top of the jacket to nothing at the bottom. The two inches of bright red flap at the top is quite annoying when you have the jacket unzipped. Far worse, however, is that the way the flap is tapered it is perfectly optimized to jam the front zipper. The first few times I wore the jacket the zipper jammed on the flap and I had to spend a few minutes carefully getting the zipper unstuck. After a few jams I started to get into the habit of guiding the red flap away from the zipper as I zip up the coat to keep it from jamming. This seems to work well, except when I forget. At first the sizing and front zipper jammer flap seemed to be the only problems with the coat. Annoying since the coat was so expensive, but acceptable. Then I started to gain some experience with the jacket while riding in the rain. When there are only wet roads to deal with, or brief periods of light rain the coat does keep me dry. However, after the first steady rain I rode through I was quite wet in only 15 minutes. The front zipper is not water proof, the bright red zipper jammer flap does help somewhat at the top of the jacket where it is big, but where it tapers to nothing at the bottom there is no protection. My shirt had a big pyramid shaped wet spot down the front of it as a result. The elbows are not waterproof, both of my elbows on the shirt I was wearing underneath were wet. The elastic neoprene like material used on the sleeve cuffs and collar make a nice tight fit that keeps the water out, but at the same time the material is quite absorbent. This means the coat will often dry quickly except the almost sponge like sleeve cuffs and collar. The final straw was when I noticed that the material used to make the shiny black stripes on the shoulders is already wearing out! Presumably this is because I wear a backpack during the week on my commuter rides. This is absolutely unacceptable! I have had several high end weather proof coats and none have worn out within a month regardless of wearing a backpack or not. Think twice before purchasing this jacket. I went in on this one because it looked good and Assos has a lot of good reviews for their products in general, but this Assos product is a complete blunder.

PROS:
Nice style
Light weight and packs down small

CONS:
Too short in the front by an inch or two.
Red flap in the front is annoying when the jacket is unzipped.
Front zipper constantly jams on the red flap in the front unless care is taken.
Poor waterproofing.
The material used to make the shiny black shoulder stripes is cracking / wearing out after just one month of use.

Excellent purchase

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I gave the jacket its first serious run out a few days ago. The ride started very early morning, still dark and chilly. I felt very comfortable in it as it kept me warm and the wind off of me. During a long and strenuous ascent that has me sweating profusely, I still felt comfortable as the jacket breathed effectively- just as the description said it would. The second half of my ride had me working hard for two hours in torrential and cold rain. Again, the jacket worked perfectly. I felt comfortable, warm and dry in some of the most inclement conditions I've ridden in for a long while. In short, though it is a little pricey, the jacket is everything Assos said it is. They've created another winner and I love it!
