The Assos LS.skinFoil_winterPlus Base Layer was constructed to be the ultimate long sleeve core protection for cold-weather winter cycling. As with the other six base layers in Assos' new skinFoil line, the LS.skinFoil_winterPlus Base Layer has abandoned the pricey, multiple pre-shaped panels of the past. Instead, the Swiss apparel designers took the approach of employing a less expensive, less restrictive, and more comfortable tubular construction. What this really means is that with the new skinFoil yarns, the LS.skinFoil_winterPlus Base Layer ensures that you'll remain comfortable and dry out on the frigid roads this winter.

Assos' new skinFoil yarns are integral to the functionality of the LS.skinFoil_winterPlus base layer. This material is a proprietary blend of polypropylene and polyester. Polypropylene and polyester are both polymers, meaning that they're both essentially plastics. However, where they differ is that polypropylene is hydrophobic to the point that it's unable to absorb water. And, as a result, it spreads moisture out over a larger surface area, which rapidly accelerates evaporation. So, in short, these fibers ensure that your torso and arms will remain dry. And when combined, the two fibers provide you with the ideal interface for interaction with either your jersey or jacket. This yarn blend also forms a highly-elastic material that creates a push-pull effect in order to hold your muscles in place as you ride. The fabric is also antistatic and antibacterial, and it's also been dermatologically tested and approved. This means that you'll remain comfortable, fresh, and, most importantly, dry underneath all of your outer layers.

For this new collection of base layers, Assos decided to forgo any pre-shaped paneling designs in favor of a seamless, tubular construction. The reasoning behind this is that you receive a pleasing, non-restrictive level of fit. The fabric matrix is also spun, much like a sock, versus the standard flatbed knit technology. And compared to even a flatlock construction, this tubular method better wraps and supports your torso. However, just because skinFoil has abandoned Assos' hallmark of multi-panel patterns, it doesn't mean that it's abandoned Assos' AEPD ideology. In fact, you'll find that Assos has expanded on this through the incorporation of "bodyMap." Essentially, this takes the next-to-skin riding position of AEPD (advanced ergonomic pattern design) and increases its freedom of movement and low volume by varying the material thickness, structure, and elasticity around the body. This way, Assos guarantees a purposeful fit that feels nearly custom to your body.

The Assos LS.skinFoil_winterPlus Base Layer is available in the color Black and in the sizes 0 (XX-Small/X-Small), I (Small/Medium), II (Large/X-Large), and III (XX-Large/TIR). If you're familiar with Assos' ALS Climarange, this base layer falls into Winter Plus 7. However, if you're not fluent in Assos, it means that it's appropriate for low winter temperatures — roughly 20 degrees Fahrenheit and below.

Really Nice!

  • Fit: True to size

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but true to size, an insane quality.

Finally had a chance to try this base layer out of the past few weeks. Temps ranged from low 30's to 50. I wore this with a long sleeve jersey, which had just a little insulating material on it. I was absolutely comfortable through that temperature range. two of my rides were group rides and I was by far better equipped than anyone else, I wasn't really sweating in the upper temps, or at least very very little. I never had to shed, just unzipped my jersey a little. And in the lower temps felt just fine, the windstopper front of this is just fantastic. It will be my most used winter piece.

If you buy only one winter garment, then buy this. I have used it at 15F (-9C) with a thin layer under and winter jacket over and was never cold. You will feel a slight cooling sensation when you perspiration evaporates off your back. The fit is sublime. I would say that it fits like a glove but it really is more like a sock. It is well worth the money.

Update: I have been wearing this all winter here in the Northeast US. This winter has been brutal with an average temperature in February of only 20F. I've ridden outside all but eight days in January and February in temperatures from 10F to 30F with strong winds and even some snow. I use this with the early winter base layer underneath and a Bonka jacket on top. I have experienced only the slightest cold arms at the beginning of rides. The garment is amazing. Yes, it is snug but does not feel so when riding. I highly recommend this for cold winters.

The Best

I've worm many other thermal base layers in the past and this is by far the best I've ever tried. I only need this and a winter jacket to stay comfortable down to 25deg. Great as a base layer for skiing too. Even my wife thinks it looks OK....and that's saying something for bike wear!! True to size.
