Assos LL.haBu_s5 Cycling Bib Tights $368.95
Comfort is everything.
With its S5 series, Assos has you covered for any weather condition. From chilly to downright cold, the LL.haBu_s5 Bib Tights provide protection when shorts or knickers are inadequate. Truthfully, while we appreciate a bare lower leg, there's a point where the warmth and comfort of Assos' Roubaix fabric goes further than a healthy layer of embrocation.
Assos' LL.haBu_s5 bib tights use a combination of the soft Roubaix and Roubaix Q fabrics. Roubaix is a thicker-than-average Lycra with a wicking microfleece interior. It provides the kind of warm, fuzzy feel that can be the difference between soldiering on, or turning back for home when the weather is bleak and dismal. The panels that line the seat area and inner leg are made from the ultra-warming Roubaix fabric. While the outer portion of the legs and the back of the knee use Roubaix Q — a material that starts its life as Roubaix. However, Assos cuts a waffle pattern into the microfleece interior for Roubaix Q. The reduction in material doesn't decrease the warmth, however, it does decrease the weight and bulk in comparison to standard Roubaix. This is especially important at the knee. The lighter Roubaix Q material won't bunch and chafe at the back of the knee when you pedal.
The anatomic shaping of the Roubaix and Roubaix Q panels allow the S5 bib tights to fit against your skin, and to move smoothly with your legs as you tick away the winter miles. And since you'll be using the tights for long base miles in the saddle, Assos gave the bib tights the FI.Mille_S5 Chamois. It's curved to perfectly fit your body, and it has a built-in channel to reduce genital pressure. Additionally, it has the same softness and heat-ventilation dimples of the FI.13 chamois. Compared to FI.13, the FI.Mille insert has been given a "long distance" designation by Assos. This is due to the increased surface area, its lessened stretch, and its built in stabilizer. Collectively, the Mille's characteristics cause it to move less during your pedal stroke, and thus minimizing abrasion and pressure. One aspect of the FI. Mille chamois that we love is that the front portion is cut high enough to prevent 'podium bulge' for the moments that you'll be spending off the bike in the cafe or general store.
For maximum ventilation and stretch, Assos gave the bib uppers a large mesh insert in the back. As is often the case with Assos, a few small details make the difference — the bib tights have foot stirrups to hold the legs in place throughout your ride, a 10cm zipper is used in the front to facilitate natural breaks, and a small, but crucial, patch of windproof material is strategically placed at the top of the pelvic region.
The Assos LL.haBu_s5 Bib Tights are available in the color Black and in sizes Small, X-Large, XLG, and TIR. The bib tights are considered to be part of Assos' climaRange.5. Allow us to translate Assos-speak — the bib tights provide complete protection around a temperature range of 41 to 51 degrees Fahrenheit (5 to 10 degrees Celsius).

Perfect for Real Winters
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
If your winter consists of only a few days below 45 degrees, these aren't for you. However, if you're like me, and half of your year is below 40 degrees, it's hard to do any better these tights. The fit is exceptional, especially behind the knees, and the uppers provide a nice added touch of warmth. I agree with the comment below that the FI.Mille chamois is a bit overkill for those of us who prefer a more minimal feel on the saddle, but regardless, it's still really comfortable.
My only complaint would be that the stomach zipper is a little finicky, and admittedly, it has run off of the teeth a couple of times. This is me looking for a fault, though. So, if you refuse to let the cold confine you to the trainer, I highly recommend these tights.
Nice fit but overly thick chamois.
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
First Impression: The overall fit is outstanding and very comfortable. I have some initial reservations about the chamois though - it is so thick it feels like riding with a pillow on your saddle. That makes it hard for my sit bones to find the saddle's sweet spot. The thickness of the pad also drapes over the saddle nose to increase the effective saddle width, with potential for interference with leg movement. On to the legs: The stirrups that go under your foot are a good idea to keep the tights in place while eliminating the need for a potentially irritating leg zipper. The stirrups are not labeled though so you have to be careful to slide your foot in correctly without twisting the lower leg backwards. Overall fit is a nice, high compression but the fabric still conforms and flexes where needed to maintain comfort while riding.
Worth Every Penny.

These tights are probably the best cycling kit investment I have ever made. These are so good, I even plunked down on a second pair! The fit is sublime, like a second skin. No bunching, no slipping around. The pad is on thicker side, but very comfortable and stays in place well. For proper fit the bibs should feel quite snug when standing, but once on the bike they are perfection. I am 6', 170 lbs, 33" waist, 38' chest and size L is perfect. I have used them in temps from 4 - 12 Celsius (39 - 53 F), both wet and dry. If it is super windy and cold these are probably not quite enough, I prefer to have something with windproof panels on the front when the temps get down near freezing (I have older LL Winter tights sans chamois for those days).
Seriously, if you are considering buying these tights just pull the trigger - you won't regret the decision but I won't be held responsible if you end up buying 2 pair.
Absolutely amazing. Buy them now.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
These tights are amazing. They are absolutely worth the money. I was skeptical at first but it is unbelievable how good these things are. Save up some money, buy these tights, take care of them, and just use them every ride. I used to think there was value in purchasing many different bibs / tights and alternating them, but not I would never do that. Simply buy a top-of-the-line pair of bibs and tights and roll with those until they wear out, which with Assos, will not likely be very soon.
