It's no secret that when you're wearing anything Assos, you're wearing the best that money can buy. As a result, Assos is considered to be the indisputable leader of technology-driven cycling apparel, and the LL.uma s5 Cycling Bib Tights are its new cold weather creation. Designed with nothing short of perfection in mind, the LL.uma bib tights provide a 'second skin' anatomical fit that warms as it compresses. You deserve the best, and Assos is here to give it to you.

The Assos LL.uma s5 Cycling Bib Tights use a sixteen panel construction made from six different proprietary fabrics. Why so much? Because the bib tights are designed to fit like a second skin. Literally. The first, and most notable, feature towards this means is the LL.uma's single-suspender design. Assos touts this as the pinnacle of anatomic bib straps, and we have to say that we agree with them. Going between the breasts, instead of over them, the single-suspender strap is capable of conforming to every body type. In addition, the suspender uses a special ABC-M locking mechanism that allows it to be locked into three different positions for an optimal fit.

Not only did Assos reinvent the bib strap for the LL.uma, but the entire approach to how a bib tight should fit was put under the microscope. The LL.uma's cut has been designed with the tucked-in riding position in mind—this is where the sixteen panel construction plays in. To achieve this, the knee sections have been incorporated into a panel that runs from the hip to just below the kneecap. This pattern reduces pleating, and thus eliminates fabric-friction and abrasion throughout the leg. Additionally, the multiple patterns allow the bib tights to follow the body's contours throughout the predictable movements of cycling. Furthermore, the glove-like fit is held securely by seamless footbridge stirrups that bolster the continuity of the bib tights' warming insulation layer.

As if Assos hasn't planned enough for your comfort in the saddle, the LL.uma s5 features the luxurious FI.Lady_S5 chamois that Assos claims to reduce genital area pressure by 23 percent over previous Assos generations. With its seamless waffle design and Elastic Interface construction, the chamois stays dry and eliminates abrasion.

For maximum effectiveness, Assos recommends wearing these tights between the temperatures of 32 and 47 degrees Fahrenheit.

The LL.uma s5 Cycling Bib Tights are available in sizes from X-Small to X-Large, and in the colors Black Volkanga and White Panther. Assos plans the use of its garments in conjunction with other products in its lines. Pricey but worth it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These tights not only look good, but are about as functionally perfect as you can hope for. I have used them in 28 degree windy conditions w no complaints. The wind stopper fabric over the knee/thigh area really does it's job. If there is a down side, it would be that they take a bit more care and time to get on and off due to the wind fabric. Now if only Assos would make a jacket as warm as the tights, my winter riding would be perfect!

Do you find the need to wear any kind base layer bottoms, or 'over-pants', when cycling in the 20F's?

I'll check back.
