Winterproof.

Since they rank a five out of seven on Assos' elemental protection scale, the LL.haBu Bib Tights are probably sufficient enough to see most cyclists through the winter. In fact, their use of Assos' RXQ fabric, which has become a well-known companion for many of us over the course of long winter base miles, means they'll likely be able to handle winter almost anywhere.

The only difference between these bib tights and the LL.haBu_S5 is that omitting the S5 suffix means that the LL.haBu Bib Tights shown here also omit a chamois. Since the bib tights have no insert, you're free to use your favorite summer shorts underneath or even run them chamois-free. Assos suggests that they can also be used for cross-training, but the cycling-specific cut and articulation throughout their construction means they are best suited for use in the saddle.

Since this is Assos, you know you're getting into some serious R&D with the materials. The LL.haBu is remarkably tame for Assos when you consider that only two fabrics are used, but those two fabrics are doozies. The most prominent of the two, RXQ, is a thicker-than-average Lycra with a wicking microfleece interior. Assos cuts a waffle pattern into the microfleece interior for RXQ to decrease weight and create tiny pockets of air that insulate your body's microclimate against the cold.

At the lower abdomen, the LL.haBu Bib Tights incorporate a panel of a four-way stretch, windproof, and waterproof material called stratagonLight, which is — according to Assos — borderline sentient. While we think it's a bit much to claim that the material has agency, it does adapt to your microclimate's condition with a dilating membrane. The cold causes the fabric's membrane to close up for full protection from the elements. As you warm up and start to overheat, the membrane opens, increasing breathability and regulating temperature. Assos also claims the extra protection reduces the need for bio breaks. We don't know if this is true, but we can attest to the benefits of shielding your core.

As is often the case with Assos, a few small details make the difference, such as the foot stirrups to hold the legs in place throughout your ride. Also, in the event that you still need to take a natural break despite the stratgonLight panel's best intentions, a front zipper facilitates the ins and outs of restroom stops.

The Assos LL.haBu Bib Tights are available in six sizes ranging from Small to TIR in the color Volkanga Black.
