A legend is born

The Assos airJack was the jacket that changed the rule book for cycling apparel. Combining a windproof front panel with an exact fit, the airJack was a weatherproof masterpiece that skewed the line between jersey and jacket. Well, times have changed, the competition has gotten smarter, and Assos realized that it was time to step up the airJack's game. Going back to the drawing board, Assos has managed to revolutionize the cycling world again with the successor to the throne, the iJ.bonka.6 Mille Jacket.

Before going any further, it's worth noting that we tend to disagree with most manufacturers' temperature recommendations. That's not the case with Assos. The Swiss brand recommends the bonka in temperatures ranging from 32 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and—except for the especially cold-hardy or cold-prone among us—our use pattern generally falls within those guidelines. The blend of certain materials in certain areas suit the jacket perfectly for the mid-30s, and strategic layering pushes it easily into sub-freezing temps.

Like the airJack, the bonka is partially windproof, partially not. That's how it gets the climaRange.6 designation, which is considered to be the above-freezing temperatures of winter. The chest and arm panels that face the wind take advantage of Assos' TwinDeckFoiling, which keeps the chill at bay with separate windproof and insulating layers. The outer-layer is the strataGonUltra material—Assos' new waterproof, breathable, and flexible membrane that's less breathable when cold and more breathable as the air directly next to the membrane heats up. This allows it to retain more heat when you're cold and to be more breathable once you heat up and start to sweat.

TwinDeckFoilling's inner, insulating layer is Assos' RXQ fabric, a lightweight stretch fabric that's smooth on one side and fleecy on the other. RXQ is myopically focused on retaining body heat, so it doesn't do much in the way of blocking wind and rain; however, given the dual-layer construction, it doesn't have to. RXQ maintains a warm microclimate against your skin while strataGonUltra protects that microclimate from the external elements.

Since they don't see the elements as much, the inner-arms and side panels are made from strataGonMedium, a lighter, stretchier, and more vapor-permeable version of the Ultra. This material provides both a better fit and more enhanced ventilation in an area that, frankly, can benefit from those exact properties without risking too much by reducing wind resistance. The back panel consists of RX fabric, a heavyweight thermal material that insulates, ventilates, and breathes well because it lacks the windproof membrane housing the front panels' RXQ. By positioning wind-blocking material up front and thermal material in back, Assos creates a cocoon of warmth that lets your body heat itself up, allows for plenty of breathability to fend off clammy chills, and prevents the cold air from cutting into your core on the leading edge.

The bonka also features a few new tricks compared to the airJack. Including extra shaping at the elbow for greater comfort and a stabilizing hem in the rear. It also conceals an additional thin, insulating gaiter between the shoulder blades—doubtlessly inspired by the many cyclists who borrow 'neck gaiters' from the ski drawer to help keep their necks warm on the coldest of days. In the low-30s, the gaiter deploys to keep your nose, jaw, and neck warm; otherwise, you can keep it tucked away in its own secure strap. The Mille suffix indicates that Assos has longer, more relaxed rides or heavy winter layering regimens in mind for this version of the bonka: Mille indicates that it's cut according to the brand's more accommodating regularFit. If you're looking for the over-the-top, skinny Euro fit, try the Cento version.
