Assos hK.434 Lady Women's Knickers $248.95
The way knickers should fit.
Knickers might look like an easy garment to make, but experience indicates otherwise. Assos recognizes this; that's why the HK.434 S5 Lady Knickers are made from seven pattern pieces using two different kinds of spandex. Most of the panels are made from Assos Type A.434 compression spandex, a new material for the company. What's different about it is that it's really dense and thin; with more threads per square inch, the compression is greater, the stretch more specific, and the return faster. But that wasn't enough. Assos also engineered a permanent anti-bacterial treatment to the threads, resulting in improved hygiene, more comfort for sensitive skin, better resistance to toxic sweat, and, possibly most important, increased lifespan.
The panel pattern is based on the Assos H FI.Lady_S5 shorts, which have been praised for their fit. No pinching, bunching, bagging, or bulging, they fit like a second skin everywhere. These knickers borrow the two-part waistband of the S5 short as well. Knowing a waistband that goes around the entire waist can feel restrictive, Assos uses elastic only in the back-half of the shorts. And the band is a wide one, for better load distribution. In front, they've stitched in a wide, soft, band of spandex that will hug the body and not squeeze it. Down at the knee and the calf, the paneling takes some interesting turns. You'll notice that the front panel is cut on a diagonal. In the back, the panel wraps around the knee and is broad enough that the stitching is above the bend of the knee. The second material is RXQ, a warmer spandex that has two-way stretch and a 3D air channel structure for warmth. The overall result is that there's no chafing nor any feeling that a seam is abrading anywhere.
A key element to the S5 shorts and to these knickers is the S5 chamois. It's the celeste green pad you've heard about. It's a bit shorter front-to-back and a bit wider in the sit bones than most pads. A design made for comfort, it stretches readily and has extra protection in all the right places. When seen in hand, the extra padding doesn't look like much, but when worn, you'll feel the difference under your sit-bones.
As with all Assos garments, they fit best when you're riding in them, not standing around. Pull them on and they might feel as if they don't fit right. Lean forward and grab a pair of imaginary handlebars and they should suddenly feel as if they're not there.
Assos has been very good about coordinating garments with seasons. This is a late spring through early fall garment, according to Assos, with a temperature range of 57 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Assos HK.434 S5 Lady Knickers come in Black. Sizes run from X-Small to X-Large.
- How to Measure:
- For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
- Standing with your feet together, measure around the widest part of your hips.
- Measure around the widest part of your chest.
What community has to say
Assos good but descriptions very vague
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I ordered these knickers expecting to get a different chamois. Customer service agreed that the chamois was not what they thought, so I was sent another pair. The second pair was just like the first. I really wanted these knickers because of the temperature range. So, I'm keeping them, although I would have preferred the expected chamois, which had no "butt" outline (especially given the price), but I liked the chamois I got well enough. I love the material that the knickers are made of. Although supposedly compressive, I did not find them to be so, and I ordered according to Assos' measurement system.
This is my first pair of Assos clothing ever. But I really wish that every pair of Assos clothing would have picture of chamois, inseam length (good luck finding that out, too), etc.
But, the sales help from Competitive Cyclist/Backcountry was very prompt and they did their best.
